School tests can be stressful. But they might also
encourage you to help change the world. Three girls, Kristen, Jenna and Marisa from New York, learned about a growing problem from a reading test they took. The problem is e-waste, short for electronic waste. The girls learned some dangerous chemicals (化学品)in e-waste can harm the environment and people.
Later in the year, they had to come up with an idea for a science project. They remembered the interesting topic from their test. So the girls started a recycling drive to help other students and the community learn about properly recycling e-waste. They called themselves the E-Waste Girl
“In our town, people recycle paper plastic and glass, but not electronics. What can we do?” asked Marisa.
“How about asking our friends if they know how to recycle e-waste?” suggested Jenna. The girls asked their friends, and nobody had heard anything about it. Many of their teachers didn’t know either. So they taught everyone, including their teachers, to learn about properly recycling e-waste. Then they put recycling boxes in the school hall and asked the students to

collect old cell phones, radios and other items. When the boxes were full, they sent them to a special recycling center. The recyclers took out the dangerous chemicals and disposed (处理)of them properly, so that they don’t go into the air or the ground or the water.
One big way people can help reduce e-waste is by buying smartly. So the girls strongly suggested considering electronics made with fewer dangerous chemicals and choosing electronics that will last several years.

“Take it. It's a very special chair because it's impossible to be seen. It’s rather difficult to sit on, but if you take it to school and manage to sit on it, you'll start its magic and it'll be able to tell who your real friends are.”

My Dad,a Superhero
学习是件有意思的事
When I was only seven,my family took a road trip to San
Francisco. My father was driving our family car along the highway. The rain was pouring down so heavily that each drop of rain felt as if it were going to break the windshield(挡风玻璃).
I wasn't scared. The downpour fascinated me. However,my brother, who is only one year younger than me,was annoying me with his unfriendly hits. I tried hard to stop him but failed. I could only complain to Mom and our sister about the fighting in the backseat, but it was useless.
My father, who was driving, knew the way to stop us from fighting. So he said,\"Boys,do you know that I have learned magic?\"
My brother and I stopped immediately. \"What?\"
My father replied,\"Do you want me to show you some magic?\"
I felt so excited that I jumped out of my seat. Even my brother was curious about what Dad was saying. It was every child's dream to have a superhero father.
I have the ability to stop the rain from falling. It's only for short periods of time,so you have to pay close attention,\"he said.
I was speechless. This seemed to be an impossible trick, even for a superhero. I could only stare at him through the rearview mirror(后视镜),wondering if the magic could really stop the rain.
\"Are you ready?\" he asked. \"Yes!\" we both answered.
\"Okay. Let me collect my powers.\" There was a short pause. \"Okay. First, I have to say the magic words ' Abra Cadabra'. Here we go ... Abra Cadabra!\"
And just like that, for one second, the rain stopped! It was a miracle! I was shocked. My dad really was a superhero. How could I not have known? For years, he must have hidden his magical weapons in the garage. I het his old car was just a cover so that the bad guys wouldn't know who he really was.
\"Wow!\" I said to my brother, who seemed to be just as amazed as I was. \"Wow...\"was all he could say, too. Then our car drove under another overpass.

We spend hours, days and years of our lives in education. But how perfect do you think your school is? Imagine you could design your ideal school. What would it be like? What would you be doing? We want to find out what teenagers around the world think. Here is what they say :
My name is Wu Lei. I'm from China. My dream school would have an Olympic-size swimming pool, two football fields and a golf course. It would also have a cinema, a gym, a restaurant and a shopping center. My school has none of these and I think there should be more enjoyable things for pupils to do while they are studying. My name is Richard. I am from America. I think it would be great to have a day off every week, as well as the weekend. If that day was a Friday or a Monday, we would have a long weekend every week. What fun! I also think school should start later, at about 10 o’clock, and finish earlier. I'm sure we could learn just as much in fewer hours. D. wore the wooden leg and walked

For many American 10-year-olds, summer is always
a time for goofing around(消磨时光),hanging out with friends, and playing outside until the sun goes down. However, for Liam Hannon, the summer of 2017 was a bit different. That year, Liam did not want to go to summer camp, so he made a deal with his dad to stay busy and active. He joined a program to give back to the community. Specifically, he was given a task to help homeless people.
Liam pointed out to his dad that there were a lot of homeless people just outside their home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These people were hungry and Liam thought he could do something to lift their spirits. Liam and his dad began making sandwiches. Together, they made 20 lunches that first week, which they then handed out to the homeless people. When the week was over, Liam realized he was not ready to put away his bread knife just yet, so Liam's Lunches of Love was born.
\"No one should be hungry, \"Liam wrote on his GoFundMe page. He created the online page with his father as a way to help raise money for Lunches of Love. Donations that were received through GoFundMe have enabled Liam to buy a better cart(手推车) and make thousands of

His friends love drawing pictures and writing encouraging messages on the brown paper bags that the lunches and healthy snacks are packed in. \"I’ve seen people who are feeling really down. But when we hand them a lunch, their faces just light up, \"says Liam.
But he didn't stop there. Liam has another project called Legos(乐高)of Love. People send in their old toys, which are then sorted and given to children who are living at homeles shelters.
One thing is certain∶This now 12-year-old knows how to pay it forward(让爱传播出去). His Lunches of Love is an example of how even something as simple as a sandwich can change the world.

Well, finally something is happening, Kim thought. So far, it had been the most boring summer ever. Suddenly, loud beeps (哔哔声), warning that a truck is backing up, broke the afternoon silence. Kim walked over to the bushes (灌木) that separated her house from the one next door.
I hope the new neighbours are cool, she thought as she looked at the stacks of boxes outside the truck. Let’s see. Lots of boxes! That one says, “Kitchen stuff” and that one says, “Jane’s stuff”. Wow, what a huge TV! Oh, a piano. Hmm. I wonder who Jane is. And look at that, a water bowl with the name Cupcake on it.

It was after the dog had finished the water and was happily licking (舔) Kim’s hand that she looked up.
“I see you’ve met Cupcake,” said a girl she had never met before. “I’m Jane.”

“Mum,” Kim said. “Relax. She’s so friendly and sweet. Her name is Cupcake!” “I don’t care what its name is. Come home now!”
Kim looked at Jane, and then looked down her feet, not sure of what to say next.
“Go ahead,” Jane said. “We can talk later. And maybe you can show me how to get to school.”

Field Day
“It’s time for Field Day again,” thought Carly as she started the last week
of school.
Carly was not looking forward to it. “Why does everybody make a big deal out of it?” Carly asked her mom. “Well, it’s supposed to be a fun day and a day to let yourself go,” said Carly’s mom. “I’m not good at any of those games that are played, and I’m afraid the kids are going to laugh at me. Maybe I can stay home and miss Field Day,” said Carly.
Mary was Carly’s closest friend, and they walked to school every day. “Aren’t you excited about Field Day?” Mary asked Carly. “No, I don’t care about such a silly day. No one ever picks me for their team because I’m not good at those games,” answered Carly.
Mary felt bad and she told her mom how unexcited Carly was and wondered what she could do to cheer her friend up. “See if you can get in a game that you know Carly is good at,” suggested Mary’s mom. For most people, graduation (毕业) is an exciting day, but my graduation
day was not.
I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had traveled from across the country to watch our class walk across that stage. But like everyone else in my graduating class, I had watched the economy (经济) turn from bad to worse in my fourth year of university. We graduates had degrees, but very few job opportunities. I knew that the next day I would no longer have a place to call home.
I knew my small university town couldn't offer me any opportunities, so I drove to Southern California to find work. But what I thought would take a week lasted for two weeks, and then four weeks, and I found myself in the same place I was in before.
You know that feeling when you wake up and you are full of fear? Fear about something you can't control. You hope that everything that has happened to you so far is just a bad dream.
So what did I do to stay calm (沉着的、冷静的)? I wrote. Something about
putting words on the page made everything seem a little clearer, a little brighter. Something about writing gave me hope. If you want something enough... sometimes a little hope is all you need!
I turned my scary feelings into the children's book—about a surprising hero who simply refused to give up on his dream.
Then one day, without a writing degree or contacts (接触) in the writing world—just a lot of hard work—I was offered a publishing deal for my first book! After that, things slowly began to fall into place. I was offered a second book deal. Then, a few months later, I got an interview with a big company and got a good job.
It takes time, but just hold on! Things can change when you don't expect it.

The Job
“Serena, don’t forget your promise to me that you will mow(割)Mrs. Martin’s yard this weekend,” said Dad. “Don’t let me down.”
Serena was the oldest child in the family, and one of her chores was to mow their yard. Mrs. Martin, their elderly neighbor, was unable to take care of her yard, so Serena’s Dad had volunteered Serena for this job. Since Mrs. Martin’s yard was not very big, Serena knew the job would go quickly. However, she still disliked her dad’s promise.
“Why didn’t you ask me first?” Serena had complained.
“Did you ask me first when you volunteered me to be in the school festival last fall?” asked Serena’s father.
“Well, no, I didn’t ask you first, but you would have done those things anyway. You’re always willing to help.”
“I try when I can,” Dad answered. “Serena, we have known Mrs. Martin for a very long time. She has often helped our family. Now we can do something for her. Besides, the feeling you get from helping someone makes you wonder who is really helping who.”
“I don’t know, Dad,” said Serena. “The only feeling I get from mowing our yard is tired.” “Just you wait and see,” said Dad.
After breakfast, Serena made her way to Mrs. Martin’s yard. She was good at her job and soon had Mrs. Martin’s yard looking tidy. Mrs. Martin came outside with a big glass of orange juice and offered it to her. Serena stopped her work and gratefully enjoyed the drink, while Mrs. Martin talked to her about all of the flowers in her yard. Seeing the joy in Mrs. Martin’s eyes, Serena began to understand how much the yard meant to Mrs. Martin.
