第二 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A

Cosmetic surgery (整容手术) is not something to be entered into lightly.Unfortunately,in this modern world,we have become confused by very narrow standards of beauty.Images of celebrities who never seem to age are seen everywhere these days.We forget the fact that most of

these images are the result of super photo manipulation (处理),driven by the incredibly powerful beauty industry. We are all different — why should we all look the same?Isn’t there more to life than undergoing surgery in order to have the same boring face that everybody else wants to have?

—Dr Elisabeth McKenna,Psychologist

Yes,it’s fake! That’s what I told my friends when they started asking me about my nose job.I’d always been sensitive to my nose, but it took me a long time before I decided to go for cosmetic surgery.I took advice from several doctors and after careful consultation I finally decided to have it done.I had been saving money from my part-time job and my parents helped me out with the rest.It was quite expensive but I don’t regret a penny of it.In fact I wish I’d had it done a few years ago.I’m sure I wouldn’t have been teased so much at school. —Debbie Caron,Student

It makes me really angry to think of the millions of people who spend a fortune on cosmetic surgery.Surgery should be carried out for medical purposes, not vanity (虚荣心).I would rather all the money spent on cosmetic surgery was available to treat people around the world who are in need but can’t get proper medical treatment.Furthermore, there are thousands of under-qualified surgeons out there who only care about getting rich as quickly as possible. They don’t care about the psychological and physical damage they do.The whole industry makes me sick.We should do something to ban it. —Danny Glass,Student

21.What does Dr Elisabeth McKenna suggest? A.Don’t be fooled by “perfection”.

B.Cosmetic surgery

often goes wrong.

C.The beauty industry needs improving. D.It’s unnecessary to

set new standards of beauty.

22.What did Debbie Caron’s cosmetic surgery bring to her? A.More friends.

B.More worries.

C.More self-confidence. D.More job opportunities.

23.How does Danny Glass feel about those who have cosmetic surgery? A.They should be treated as patients. B.They hurt themselves

badly.

C.They can have a new start. D.They waste money and medical

resources.

24.What would be the best title for the text? A.Hard Talk — Cosmetic Surgery

B.The Future of Cosmetic Surgery C.The Mystery of Cosmetic Surgery D.A New Fashion — Cosmetic Surgery B

A good joke can be the hardest thing to understand when studying a foreign language. As a recent article in The Guardian newspaper noted,“There’s more to understanding a joke in a foreign language than understanding vocabulary and grammar.”

Being able to understand local jokes is often seen as an incredible(难以置信的)ice-breaker for a language learner eager to form friendships with native speakers.“I always felt that humor was a

ceiling(上限)that I could never break through,” Hannah Ashley,a public relations account manager in London, who once studied Spanish in Madrid, told The Guardian,“I could never speak to people on the same level as I would speak to a native English speaker.I almost came across as quite a boring person because all I could talk about was facts.”

In fact, most of the time, jokes are only funny for people who share a cultural background or understand humor in the same

way.Chinese-American comedian Joe Wong found this out first-hand.He had achieved huge success in the US,but when he returned to China in 2008 for his first live show in Beijing,he discovered that people didn’t think his Chinese jokes were as funny as his English ones.

In Australia, meanwhile many foreigners find understanding jokes about sports to be the biggest headache.“The hardest jokes are related to rugby because I know nothing about rugby,” said Melody Cao,who was once a student in Australia.“When I heard jokes I didn’t get,I just laughed along.”

In the other two major English-speaking countries, the sense of humor is also different.British comedian Simon Pegg believes that while Britons use irony-basically,saying something they don’t mean to make a joke everyday, people in the US don’t see the point of using it so often.“British jokes tend to be more subtle and dark, while American jokes are more obvious with their meanings,a bit like Americans

themselves,” he wrote in The Guardian.

25.The writer quoted the sentence,“There’s more to understanding a joke in a foreign language than understanding vocabulary and grammar.” to show that .

A.making jokes can help you make friends with native speakers B.local jokes can help you to understand the local culture better C.understanding jokes requires a good knowledge of vocabulary and grammar

D.to understand its jokes, you’d better learn the culture 26.What can we guess about Hannah Ashley? A.She feels confident in using Spanish.

B.She believes that one had better rely on facts when speaking a foreign language.

C.She thinks that Spanish people do not have much of a sense of humor. D.She feels that not being able to share their humor makes her seem boring to Spanish people.

27.Joe Wong is used as an example to .

A.show that there are cultural differences in humor B.prove that it can be difficult to translate jokes

C.suggest that bilingual people(者) have no problems in making people laugh

D.show that the expressing ability affects the sense of humor

28.From the article,we can learn that .

A.jokes about sports are the most difficult ones for foreign people who have different cultural backgrounds

B.Americans might not be able to enjoy British jokes at all

C.not all English native speakers can understand English jokes easily D.British people’s dark jokes often make people uncomfortable C

Before I studied psychology,I used to think that people would laugh when funny things occurred. While I was right about that,I discovered there are lots of other psychological factors that make people laugh other than the funny part of a joke. When someone laughs at a joke, there will usually be more than one reason that makes him laugh—and the more reasons there are,the more powerful the joke will be.

I was attending a stand-up comedy show in Egypt, and when the man started to make fun of pedestrians crossing streets, everyone laughed their hearts out.The main reason those people strongly laughed was that almost all of them felt angry towards pedestrians who crossed streets carelessly. The joke wasn’t only funny,it also made the audience feel that they were right about being angry at those pedestrians. That is,people were laughing both because of the funny joke and because of the happiness experienced as a result of the psychological support they got.

The better a joke makes a person feel, and the more it includes other psychological factors, the more the person will like it.For example,if you envy one of your friends, and someone tells a joke that is funny and,at the same time, makes your friend seem stupid, then you will probably laugh at it louder than if you weren’t jealous of him.

In short,we don’t laugh only when we hear something funny;we also laugh when we experience some kind of happiness that results from the

other psychological factors involved in the joke.I strongly discourage making fun of anyone or belittling someone to make someone else laugh. All I want to explain is that if your joke supports a person’s emotions,he will certainly like it a lot.

29.What did the author find out after studying psychology? A.Only good jokes make people laugh. B.Many factors lead to

people laughing.

C.Funny things can make people laugh. D.Laughter can make people healthy.

30.Why did the audience laugh loudly at the pedestrians? A.They played a trick on the pedestrians. B.The pedestrians behaved in a funny way. C.They could feel the pedestrians’ happiness. D.Their emotion was approved of by the show.

31.What does the underlined word “belittling” probably mean?

A.Annoy. B.Blame. C.Look down on. D.Make up to. 32.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage? D

It’s true that quite a few most respected scientific authorities have confirmed that the world is becoming hotter and hotter. There’s also strong evidence that humans are contributing to the warming.Countless recent reports have proved the same thing. For instance,a 2010 summary about the climate science by the Royal Society noted that:“The global warming over the last half-century has been caused mainly by human activity.”

You may not believe that humans could change the planet’s climate, but the basic science is well understood. Each year, billions of tons of greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere because of human activity. As has been known for years, these gases hold heat that would otherwise escape to space, wrapping the planet in an invisible blanket.

Of course, the earth’s climate has always been changing due to “natural” factors such as volcanic eruption or changes in solar,or cycles concerning the Earth’s going around the sun.According to the scientific research, however, the warming observed by now matches the pattern of warming we would expect from a build-up of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere—not the warming we would expect from other possible

causes.

Even if scientists did discover another reasonable explanation for the warming recorded so far, that would give birth to a difficult

question. As Robert Henson puts it:“If some newly-discovered factor is to blame for the climate change, then why aren’t carbon dioxide and the other greenhouse gases producing the warming that basic physics tells us they should be?”

The only way to prove with 100% certainty that humans are responsible for global warming would be to run an experiment with two identical Earths—one with human influence and one without. That obviously isn’t possible, and so most scientists are careful not to state human influence as an absolute certainty. 33.The text is developed by .

A.giving typical examples B.following the order of space C.comparing and finding differences D.analyzing a theory and arguing it

34.The underline word “identical” in the last paragraph probably means .

A.exactly the same B.totally different

C.extremely important D.partly independent 35.Which of the following can be the best title?

A.Are Humans Definitely Causing Global Warming? B.Are All the Scientists Really Scientific? C.Where Is Global Warming Leading Us to?

D.What’s the Relation of Global Warming and Greenhouse Gases? 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
