Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station(加油站)about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台),I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.

I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.

I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.

Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery(电池)was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling cars—was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.

“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?”I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.

He’s an old cobbler(修鞋匠) with a shop in the Marais,a historic area in Paris. When I took him my shoes,he at first told me:“I haven’t time.Take them to the other fellow on the main street;he’ll fix them for you right away.”

But I’d had my eye on his shop for a long time.Just looking at his bench loaded with tools and pieces of leather.I knew he was a skilled craftsman(手艺人).“No,”I replied,“the other fellow can’t do it well.”

“The other fellow” was one of those shopkeepers who fix shoes and make keys “while-U-wait”—without knowing much about mending shoes or making keys. They work carelessly, and when they have finished sewing back a sandal strap(鞋带) you might as well just throw away the pair.

My man saw I wouldn’t give in,and he smiled. He wiped his hands on his blue apron(围裙),looked at my shoes, had me write my name on one shoe with a piece of chalk and said,“Come back in a week.”

I was about to leave when he took a pair of soft leather boots off a shelf.

“See what I can do?”he said with pride,“Only three of us in Paris can do this kind of work.”

When I got back out into the street, the world seemed brand-new to me.He was something out of an ancient legend, this old craftsman with his way of speaking familiarly, his very strange dusty felt hat,his funny accent from who-knows-where and, above all,his pride in his craft.

These are times when nothing is important but the bottom line, when you can do things any old way as long as it “pays”,when,in short, people look on work as a path to ever-increasing consumption(消费) rather than a way to realize their own abilities. In such a period it is a rare comfort to find a cobbler who gets his greatest satisfaction from pride in a job well done.

Maupassant, the famous French writer, was born on August 5,1850. He was the elder son in his family. When he was eleven years old, his parents separated. The unsuccessful marriage influenced(影响)Maupassant a lot as both man and writer. This explains the frequent(频繁的)appearances in his stories of the lonely, fatherless child. Maupassant received his first education from the church. At the age of 13, he was sent to a small seminary(神学院).He disliked the form of life there. In the autumn of 1869,he began law studies in Paris. When the France-Germany War broke out, he had to stop his law studies and unwillingly served as a soldier in the war. His experiences helped much in his short stories. In July 1871,he was demobilized(复员)and started his law studies again. Then his father once helped him find a job in the Ministry of Marine and the Ministry of Public Instruction.

Maupassant luckily met Flaubert, the great novelist, with the help of his mother when he returned to Paris after the war. As Flaubert said of Maupassant,“He is my disciple(徒弟)and I love him like a son.”The apprenticeship(学徒身份)made Maupassant the writer.

In April 1880 came the turning point of Maupassant’s writing career(生涯).His first world-famous novel Ball of Fat was published. From then on, Maupassant became world-wide known. The ten years from 1880 to 1890 were remarkable for Maupassant. He produced some 300 short stories, six novels, three travel books, his only volume of verse and a fair sprinkling of miscellaneous(多方面的)works.

In 1889,something unexpected happened to his family. Maupassant’s brother died. He was driven to despair. On January 2,1892, he tried to commit suicide by cutting his throat but failed. The next year,on July 6, he died in Paris.

Sharapova awoke Monday to a phone call from her father saying,“Good morning, champion.”The Russian teen had taken over the WTA Tour’s No. 1 ranking from Lindsay Davenport, who had held the top spot since October.

“This is something I’ve dreamed of all my life,”Sharapova said.“It’s just an amazing fact to be No. 1 in world.Topping it off,I am the first Russian. I’m so excited that I could achieve it.”

Sharapova is the 15th player and the frist Russian to be No. 1 since the tour began its computer rankings in 1975. At 18, she’s also the fifth youngest to hold the top spot, following Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, Tracy Austin and Steffi Graf.

The No. 1 ranking means she’ll likely be the top seed in the U.S.Open,which begins next Monday. The draw(抽签)is Wednesday.

“It’s a good feeling to have going on the court knowing you’ve achieved this,”she said.

Sharapova knew 10 days ago that she’d jump a spot to No. 1

when this week’s rankings were released. She could have overtaken Davenport with a victory at the JPMorgan Chase Open, but had to withdraw before the quarterfinals(四分之一决赛)because of a strained chest muscle.

She skipped last weekend’s Rogers Cup in Toronto because of the same injury. But Davenport didn’t play the Rogers Cup, either, because of a lower back injury, and she didn’t have enough points to stay ahead of Sharapova this week.

Davenport dropped a spot to No. 2. The Californian has been No. 1 for 82 weeks—although not consecutively(连续地)—during her career.

“The fact you are No. 1, it just puts a smile on your face,”said Sharapova, who got congratulatory text messages from friends all over the world along with seven bouquets of flowers.

“It’s an amazing achievement. That’s all I really can say.”

Sharapova has made a stunning rise, climbing from outside the top 100 to No. 1 in a little over two years. She won Wimbledon at 17 in 2004, and has won six titles in the last 12 months. She also won the season-ending title at the Tour Championships last year.

Having returned from Berlin,he received no telephone call from the president of his own country, either. In fact,he was not honored by the United States until 1976,four years before his death.

Owens’ Olympic victories made little difference to him.He earned

his living by looking after a school playground, and accepted money to race against cars, trucks, motorcycles, and dogs.“Sure,it bothered me,” he said later.“But at least it was an honest living.I had to eat.” In time, however, his gold medals changed his life.“They have kept me alive over the years,” he once said.“Time has stood still for me.That golden moment dies hard.”
