University — the best days of my life! I made lots of friends in my student dorm, went to great parties, joined the debating society„and, well, I did some work too — but I must admit my lecturers were very patient with my tardiness（拖拉）.
It's easy to look back at our university days through rose-tinted spectacles but the truth is that when we first arrived on campus, most of us were out of our comfort zone.
In fact, a survey of students at Imperial College London has revealed that 3 out of 4 students experience high levels of stress, or a mental health condition, during their time at college. The survey, completed by over a thousand students, also found that 70% of those that experience stress do so at least once a week, and 9% of students feel stressed constantly.
Kirsty, a student at Exeter University, didn't enjoy her first days in college. She says: “When I first got to university I don't think I'd realized that I'd forgotten how to make friends. I'd been with the same
school friends for seven years, and so I was trying to balance social success with academic success while learning how to look after myself at quite a young age.”
Dr Ruth Caleb of the counseling service at Brunel University in London has some tips that should make life easier for students before they set off for university. She says: “Certain things that I think it would be very helpful for students to have put in place are an ability to do the practical things of life – to do the washing, to do the cleaning and so on — being able to cook. Budgeting is extremely important in university life.” And Caleb adds: “You should learn how to spend time on your own comfortably.”

Hybrid (杂交产生的) corn combines the best qualities of several varieties to ensure maximum
productivity. A hybrid approach to vocabulary should, in the same way, ensure maximum results. That’s why you should use the CPD formula.
Through Context. When students in a college class were asked what should be done when they
came across an unknown word in their reading, 84 percent said, “Look it up in the dictionary.” If you do, however, you short-circuit the very mental processes needed to make your efforts most productive.
But there’s another reason. Suppose someone asks you what the word “fast” means. You answer, “speedy or swift”. But does it mean that in such context as “fast color” or “fast friend”? And if a horse is fast, is it securely tied or galloping at top speed? It could be either. It all depends. On the dictionary? No, on the context. After all, there are over twenty different meanings for “fast” in the dictionary. But the dictionary doesn’t tell you which meaning is intended. That’s why it makes such good sense to begin with context.
Through Word Parts. Now for the next step. Often unfamiliar words contain one or more parts,
which, if recognized, provide definite help with meaning. Take the word “monolithic” for example. Try to separate the parts. There is the prefix mono-, meaning “one”, and the root –lith, meaning “stone”. Finally, there’s the suffix –ic, meaning “consisting of”. Those three parts add up to this definition: “consisting of one stone”.
To speed up your use of word parts, you will be introduced to the fourteen most important
words in the English language. The prefix and root elements in those few words are found in over 14,000 words. With those amazingly useful shortcuts, you can build up vocabulary, not at a snail’s pace, one word at a time, but in giant leaps, up to a thousand words at a time.
Through the Dictionary. Now you can see why you should consult the dictionary last, not first.
You’ve looked carefully at the context. You’ve looked for familiar word parts. Now you play Sherlock Homes. In light of context or word parts, you try to solve a mystery. What exactly does that strange word mean? Only after you go through the mental gymnastics to come up with a tentative (不确定的) definition should you open the dictionary to see if you’re right.

to secure an appointment at one of five U.S. consular locations（领事馆）in China that process visas. There, they’re often greeted by long lines, followed by a face-to-face interview that can end badly in a matter of seconds.
Now there are only about 100 U.S. visa officers in China, facing considerable challenges during the summer when tourists and students travel the most. “It’s not easy work,” Charles Bennett, minister-counselor for Consular Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, said to his staff. “You’re making, in some cases, life-changing decisions many times a day, and that can cause great tiredness.”
To adapt, US consular services expanded their hours, took on about a dozen additional staff and hope to have another 20 officers by spring. More facilities are also being expanded.
Despite the shocking numbers, the embassy remains dogged by charges that it rejects applicants unreasonably and that the process is unfairly burdensome. “I’m fed up,” said Wendy Liu, 24. The single woman from Beijing said she was recently refused a visa and told to re-apply when her personal life and finances were more stable. “I’ll go anywhere but the U.S. now,” she said. “I thought America was supposed to be a country of freedom.”
To visit the US, Chinese nationals must prove that they have enough money and family or business ties that make it likely they’ll return to China. The Department of Homeland Security said it did not keep records on how many Chinese overstay their visas.
Student visas can be refused on grounds of national security. Beijing native Tan Ge, 25, believes he was not accepted after he stated his interests in infrared（红外线的）technology and nanoelectronics（纳米电子学）on his application. He now studies in Canada after being forced to abandon a full scholarship to Arizona State University.
By its very nature, the on-the-spot process at the U.S. Embassy can feel unbearable to Chinese applicants, who are asked to take their bank statements, property deeds（房产证）, marriage licenses and HUKOU, a Chinese household ID.
“It made me feel very uncomfortable,” said Xu Yong, 28, a journalist who needed a business visa last month to cover a conference in New York. “They made me feel like someone from a Third World country up to no good.”

A homemade swing formed from a piece of white painted wood and two thick ropes hangs on the branches. The little girl slowly pushes herself on the swing. Singing happily, she gazes at her surroundings with large, innocent eyes. Moving around her, the woman sweeps up the fallen leaves. Suddenly the girl cries out to her mother and with a smile, she stops sweeping and carefully pulls the swing back, then gives it a great push. The little girl's face lights up in delight and her long, black hair floats behind her. I watch the scene in bittersweet memory, and the longing to return to my childhood days overcomes me. Gently, the scene disappears and the sea brings me back to the dark beach with the waves pounding in my ears.
The sky becomes hazy and I see the same woman and a thirteen-year old girl in the black distance. The clouds slowly disappear and they are sitting outside in the cool night on a wooden porch talking quietly. I cannot hear. It is as if I am watching a silent movie. The woman makes a movement as if to take the girl's hand and point out constellations（星座） in the beautiful sky above them. The girl jerks（甩开） her hand away, embarrassed. Ignorantly, she fails to notice the woman's face gazing at her in disappointment. Looking down, the girl is absorbed in arranging the flowers into different patterns on the brown wood. Suddenly, the woman stands, throws her hands down at the girl and enters the house in tears. I watch with shame the events taking place before me, and wish desperately that I could change them.
In the moonlight upon the sand, I realize our two sets of footprints have begun to separate with the slightly larger ones up towards the dry sandy hill, and the smaller ones down towards the sea water. Neither pair of footprints intended to drift apart, it is just how the journey

As far as I am concerned, TV talent show is like a double-edged sword, which can do us both
good and harm. On the one hand, these shows can provide precious opportunities for the young to express themselves and to perform their talents of singing, dancing and so on.
