第二部分 阅读理解(第一节20小题,第二节5小题;每小题2分,满分50分) 第一节 阅读下列材料,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

University — the best days of my life! I made lots of friends in my student dorm, went to great parties, joined the debating society„and, well, I did some work too — but I must admit my lecturers were very patient with my tardiness(拖拉).

It's easy to look back at our university days through rose-tinted spectacles but the truth is that when we first arrived on campus, most of us were out of our comfort zone.

In fact, a survey of students at Imperial College London has revealed that 3 out of 4 students experience high levels of stress, or a mental health condition, during their time at college. The survey, completed by over a thousand students, also found that 70% of those that experience stress do so at least once a week, and 9% of students feel stressed constantly.

Kirsty, a student at Exeter University, didn't enjoy her first days in college. She says: “When I first got to university I don't think I'd realized that I'd forgotten how to make friends. I'd been with the same

school friends for seven years, and so I was trying to balance social success with academic success while learning how to look after myself at quite a young age.”

Dr Ruth Caleb of the counseling service at Brunel University in London has some tips that should make life easier for students before they set off for university. She says: “Certain things that I think it would be very helpful for students to have put in place are an ability to do the practical things of life – to do the washing, to do the cleaning and so on — being able to cook. Budgeting is extremely important in university life.” And Caleb adds: “You should learn how to spend time on your own comfortably.”

I graduated and learnt how to take care of myself the hard way. I hope that new students these days remember to acquire some life skills before they make the big jump. 41. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined part in Paragraph 2? A. rose-shaped glasses C. negative sides

B. positive perspectives D. flower-like tools

42. What did Kirsty find most difficult to do during her first days in college?

第5页(共17页)

世纪金榜 圆您梦想 www.jb1000.com

A. Not knowing how to make new friends.

B. Not realizing the importance of making friends. C. Looking after herself at quite an early age. D. Trying to achieve academic success.

43. Which of the following tips are helpful or important EXCEPT _____ according to Dr. Ruth Caleb? A. having the ability to cook B. being able to do the cleaning

C. learning how to spend money on one’s own D. balancing social success and academic success

44. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A. During the first few days at college for new students, most of them felt comfortable. B. According to a survey, most students at Imperial College London suffered from stress at college.

C. The lecturers are always tolerant of college students’ improper behavior. D. Acquiring some life skills isn’t that important to new students.

45. What does the author probably mean by saying “I graduated and learnt how to take care of

myself the hard way”?

A. He quickly adapted to the new environment when he first arrived on campus. B. He graduated from college with many achievements.

C. It might have taken him some time to get used to college life.

D. It might have made him proud by leading an independent life at college.

B

How do you spend your time? To get it, Paul T. Rankin asked sixty-eight individuals to keep

an accurate, detailed record of what they did every minute of their waking hours. He discovered that 70 percent of their waking time was spent on one thing only — communication. Put that evidence alongside the research findings uncovered by the Human Engineering Laboratories, they discovered that, vocabulary, more than any other factor yet known, predicts financial success. New words make us better thinkers as well as communicators. What better reason for beginning right now

第6页(共17页)

世纪金榜 圆您梦想 www.jb1000.com

to extend your vocabulary? But how?

Hybrid (杂交产生的) corn combines the best qualities of several varieties to ensure maximum

productivity. A hybrid approach to vocabulary should, in the same way, ensure maximum results. That’s why you should use the CPD formula.

Through Context. When students in a college class were asked what should be done when they

came across an unknown word in their reading, 84 percent said, “Look it up in the dictionary.” If you do, however, you short-circuit the very mental processes needed to make your efforts most productive.

But there’s another reason. Suppose someone asks you what the word “fast” means. You answer, “speedy or swift”. But does it mean that in such context as “fast color” or “fast friend”? And if a horse is fast, is it securely tied or galloping at top speed? It could be either. It all depends. On the dictionary? No, on the context. After all, there are over twenty different meanings for “fast” in the dictionary. But the dictionary doesn’t tell you which meaning is intended. That’s why it makes such good sense to begin with context.

Through Word Parts. Now for the next step. Often unfamiliar words contain one or more parts,

which, if recognized, provide definite help with meaning. Take the word “monolithic” for example. Try to separate the parts. There is the prefix mono-, meaning “one”, and the root –lith, meaning “stone”. Finally, there’s the suffix –ic, meaning “consisting of”. Those three parts add up to this definition: “consisting of one stone”.

To speed up your use of word parts, you will be introduced to the fourteen most important

words in the English language. The prefix and root elements in those few words are found in over 14,000 words. With those amazingly useful shortcuts, you can build up vocabulary, not at a snail’s pace, one word at a time, but in giant leaps, up to a thousand words at a time.

Through the Dictionary. Now you can see why you should consult the dictionary last, not first.

You’ve looked carefully at the context. You’ve looked for familiar word parts. Now you play Sherlock Homes. In light of context or word parts, you try to solve a mystery. What exactly does that strange word mean? Only after you go through the mental gymnastics to come up with a tentative (不确定的) definition should you open the dictionary to see if you’re right.

You are now personally involved. Your increased interest will lead to a better memory of

第7页(共17页)

山东世纪金榜科教文化股份有限公司

世纪金榜 圆您梦想 www.jb1000.com

both word and meaning. It also encourages your development of the habits needed to accelerate your progress. And when you see in black and white the definition you had expected, what a feeling of accomplishment is yours. In that way, the CPD Formula provides the exact approaches for maximum effectiveness.

Well, there it is, your new formula — Context, Parts, Dictionary. Use it! The results will

be like the money in the bank.

The Chinese put up with a lot living in the world’s most populous country: standing on over-crowded trains for 40 hours; sleeping outside hospitals to secure a doctor’s appointment; waiting more than a year to earn a driver’s license.

Add getting a U.S. entry visa to the list. Applicants here have waited as long as 60 days

世纪金榜 圆您梦想 www.jb1000.com

to secure an appointment at one of five U.S. consular locations(领事馆)in China that process visas. There, they’re often greeted by long lines, followed by a face-to-face interview that can end badly in a matter of seconds.

Now there are only about 100 U.S. visa officers in China, facing considerable challenges during the summer when tourists and students travel the most. “It’s not easy work,” Charles Bennett, minister-counselor for Consular Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, said to his staff. “You’re making, in some cases, life-changing decisions many times a day, and that can cause great tiredness.”

To adapt, US consular services expanded their hours, took on about a dozen additional staff and hope to have another 20 officers by spring. More facilities are also being expanded.

Despite the shocking numbers, the embassy remains dogged by charges that it rejects applicants unreasonably and that the process is unfairly burdensome. “I’m fed up,” said Wendy Liu, 24. The single woman from Beijing said she was recently refused a visa and told to re-apply when her personal life and finances were more stable. “I’ll go anywhere but the U.S. now,” she said. “I thought America was supposed to be a country of freedom.”

To visit the US, Chinese nationals must prove that they have enough money and family or business ties that make it likely they’ll return to China. The Department of Homeland Security said it did not keep records on how many Chinese overstay their visas.

Student visas can be refused on grounds of national security. Beijing native Tan Ge, 25, believes he was not accepted after he stated his interests in infrared(红外线的)technology and nanoelectronics(纳米电子学)on his application. He now studies in Canada after being forced to abandon a full scholarship to Arizona State University.

By its very nature, the on-the-spot process at the U.S. Embassy can feel unbearable to Chinese applicants, who are asked to take their bank statements, property deeds(房产证), marriage licenses and HUKOU, a Chinese household ID.

“It made me feel very uncomfortable,” said Xu Yong, 28, a journalist who needed a business visa last month to cover a conference in New York. “They made me feel like someone from a Third World country up to no good.”

After giving his fingerprints, Xu waited to be called for his interview, sitting in an area

第9页(共17页)

山东世纪金榜科教文化股份有限公司

世纪金榜 圆您梦想 www.jb1000.com

that was as quiet as a library. Each passing minute seemed to be as long as a century.

After an hour, Xu was called with three other people to a window for their interview. Two were rejected before his turn. Then the American officer, speaking fluent Chinese, reached for Xu’s paperwork, asked some simple questions and said, “Congratulations.”

“I was so nervous. The first thing I did when I got out was to call my mom and tell her I passed,” Xu said. “She was the one who warned me it wasn’t going to be easy.” 50. We can learn from Paragraph 2 that in China ________.

A. you may quickly be rejected for a U.S. visa after a long wait B. getting a U.S. visa is not as hard as getting a driver’s license C. an applicant has to wait two months to get a visa for the U.S. D. there are more than five US consular locations stamping visas 51. What makes it tiring work to be a U.S. visa officer? A. Overcrowded workplaces.

B. Expanded working hours. D. Over-loaded responsibilities.

C. Poorly-equipped offices.

52. The underlined word “dogged” in Paragraph 5 means “________”. A. troubled

B. pardoned

C. submitted

D. abandoned

53. Beijing native Tan Ge was refused a U.S. visa probably because he ________. A. had no stable income C. had too wide interests

B. was supposed to be unsafe for the U.S. D. had got a full scholarship in the U.S.

54. Why does the author give a detailed description of Xu Yong’s experience? A. To show how lucky Xu is to make it to New York.

B. To reflect the problems in processing a U.S. entry visa. C. To stress what a hard-won success it is to get a U.S. visa. D. To persuade readers out of working or studying abroad.

In the twilight, we begin the journey together down the endless sandy beach. As nightfall sweeps across the sky, the sudden darkness catches me by surprise and she becomes only a hazy (模糊的) figure in the black. I do not have to look to know she is still there walking beside

me. That sweet, comforting scent that only a mother can wear, a smell that a child will never forget silently assured me. It reminds me of my childhood days and I can barely see two figures in the dark. Slowly the shadows take shape, and transform into a woman and a girl of five years of age. Scenery appears from the dark corners and a simple house comes into view.

The rich blue sky spreads itself broadly behind it. It is all clear now and I carefully watch them playing in the small backyard, beneath a towering mango tree. A homemade swing formed from a piece of white painted wood and two thick ropes hangs on the branches. The little girl slowly pushes herself on the swing. Singing happily, she gazes at her surroundings with large, innocent eyes. Moving around her, the woman sweeps up the fallen leaves. Suddenly the girl cries out to her mother and with a smile, she stops sweeping and carefully pulls the swing back, then gives it a great push. The little girl's face lights up in delight and her long, black hair floats behind her. I watch the scene in bittersweet memory, and the longing to return to my childhood days overcomes me. Gently, the scene disappears and the sea brings me back to the dark beach with the waves pounding in my ears.

The sky becomes hazy and I see the same woman and a thirteen-year old girl in the black distance. The clouds slowly disappear and they are sitting outside in the cool night on a wooden porch talking quietly. I cannot hear. It is as if I am watching a silent movie. The woman makes a movement as if to take the girl's hand and point out constellations(星座) in the beautiful sky above them. The girl jerks(甩开) her hand away, embarrassed. Ignorantly, she fails to notice the woman's face gazing at her in disappointment. Looking down, the girl is absorbed in arranging the flowers into different patterns on the brown wood. The woman is staring eagerly at the girl, trying to make conversation, and using her hands to gesture. Yet the girl never once looks up, never says more than a few words. I watch helplessly, as the woman feels more and more frustrated and hopeless. Unaware of her mother's feelings, the girl continues to shut her out. Suddenly, the woman stands, throws her hands down at the girl and enters the house in tears. I watch with shame the events taking place before me, and wish desperately that I could change them.

In the moonlight upon the sand, I realize our two sets of footprints have begun to separate with the slightly larger ones up towards the dry sandy hill, and the smaller ones down towards the sea water. Neither pair of footprints intended to drift apart, it is just how the journey

goes. The beach fades as a new scene appears. Beneath my feet, the soft sand is replaced by a cold white floor. Bright lights shine on me from the ceiling, and soon I feel sweat dripping down my face. The line begins to move.

“Time to go.” I whisper. She does not say a word, but smiles a watery smile and holds my hand tightly. Slowly she lets go, but I continue to cling to her hand, desperate in the moment. The excited emotions I had felt a week ago were gone, and only the sick feeling of leaving home existed. We look at each other, and in that gaze, a thousand words pass between us. I drop her hand and wrap my arms around her back tightly, giving her a long squeeze. Unwillingly, we tear apart and I head slowly down the long corridor, looking back once, twice, to see if she is still standing there, watching me. I smile as my eyes fill with tears, and turn the corner.

Everything blurs(变模糊), and I shake my head to clear the haziness. I am lost in the cool sea breeze. Looking up at her, I feel the desire to run and wrap my arms around her legs as I once used to. I long for her to walk beside me, my companion along our journey once again. Staring at her turned head expectantly, she turns and catches my eye and holds the gaze for a long time in pure silence. Giving a gentle smile, she walks down toward me. Together, we continue our journey to the end of the beach, her footprints and mine.

第二节:下面文章中有5个段落需要添加首句 (第61~65题)。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出符合各段落的首句。选项中有一项是多余选项。 A. Dress for success B. Offer positive comments C. Limit what you say D. Focus on your abilities E. Likability counts F. Ask for the job

Every year, millions of job hunters make great efforts to land a job they want. However, many of them fail, partly due to their lack of common knowledge in dealing with job interviews. Here are some of the principles that they should bear in mind when attending a job interview. 61. ______

While most employers know and understand that employees have their life business outside of work, they do not want to hear about them or see evidence of these getting in the way of work. Therefore, when attending a job interview, try not to mention the family difficulty or trouble

B. A Journey to the Beach C. Her Gaze D. Mother’s Love

that you are facing right now, and focus on all the things that you are capable of doing in your future work. 62. ______

Before going to attend an interview, search for some information about the employees of that company: What kind of work are they mostly doing? What kind of working clothes are preferred in their working conditions? Are there any specific requirements or taboos for the clothes? Prepare well and dress yourself properly in order to be considered professional at the first meeting. 63. ______

One of the biggest mistakes many job seekers make is ruining an otherwise successful interview by not actually asking for the job. It might seem unnecessary. After all, the job seeker would not have applied if he or she did not want the job. However, by asking for the job in the interview, the job seeker is sending a strong message to the employer that he or she is interested in the job and is enthusiastic about the opportunity. By saying “my main goal is to be working for you”, you are actually demonstrating the type of interest and enthusiasm that any employer would like to hear form a candidate. 64. ______

When asked about your former work experience, keep your comments about your former boss or colleagues very positive. Even if your former working conditions were really bad or that you didn’t get on well with your boss or colleagues, you are still supposed not to bite behind their backs. Otherwise, the interviewers may have the feeling that you will gossip or speak ill of them once they become your employers. 65. ______

In a real world interview, the personal connection established with the interviewer (i.e., does he or she like you) could be the key factor in determining your employment fate. In an interview, this personal connection is often established within the first five minutes of the interview, and while a positive connection will not necessarily result in a job offer, a negative connection will almost always result in rejection. The lack of likability was a major reason behind the firing of many interviewees who were not able to make a positive impression on their

interviewers.

IIV. 书面表达(30分) 参考范文

With different media across China coming up with various shows, TV talent show has grown in popularity in recent years. Meanwhile, it is not uncommon to see many young people, even high school students, attend these shows.

As far as I am concerned, TV talent show is like a double-edged sword, which can do us both

good and harm. On the one hand, these shows can provide precious opportunities for the young to express themselves and to perform their talents of singing, dancing and so on. On the other hand, they may also mislead the youth and make them believe that they can make easy money or become famous overnight, ignoring the fact of “No pains, no gains.”

Therefore, it is of vital importance for us, especially young people and their parents, to think twice before attending them.
