In the UK, 12 to 16 year olds are the most vulnerable(易受伤的 )group of young people-six out of ten have either been involved in a road accident or know someone who has.Research suggests that young people of this age can be easily made absent-minded. 60% of teenagers say their attention may be disturbed by using mobiles and talking to friends when crossing roads. They aren't thinking about the traffic when they step off the pavement. An 18-year-olq driver is far more likely to be involved in a crash than a 48-year-old one. One in five drivers crash within their first year of driving and, as such (照此), new drivers add to accident and casualty rates on our roads.

Most road traffic injuries can be prevented or reduced. Children and young people themselves can help reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads. The possibility of being involved in an accident immediately reduces when children learn about the risks and possible dangers on the road. They should know the Green Cross Code-Stop, Look and Listen! —from school. Children should always use selected crossing where they can consider possible dangers of the road before stepping out. Wearing a crash helmet when cycling or riding a scooter and wearing seat belts in the car are simple ways of reducing the chances of being killed or seriously injured in an accident.

Up to 85 % of preventable pre-hospital deaths from road crashes could be avoided if first aid was carried out before the emergency services arrive. It is possible that children walking to school might be the first to arrive at the scene of a crash and their first aid knowledge could save lives. Basic first aid can be learned by almost anyone. Children over the age of nine can understand and learn many first aid rules which could be helpful at an accident scene. They can learn to keep calm and help others remain calm. They can call for help, keep the injured warm, keep others out of danger by making the area safe and perform any first aid techniques that they have learnt until the emergency services arrive.

51. Why are teenagers more likely to get involved in road accidents?

4

A. They don't like stepping off the pavement.

A. Teach children the proper way of crossing the road. B. Warn children of possible dangers of the road.

C. How to help the children seriously injured on the roads. D. How to help the young to reduce or prevent road accidents.

53. The underlined words \"Green Cross Code\" in Paragraph 2 may refer to \"____\". A. traffic safety rules B. possible danger signs C. emergency services D. first aid knowledge

. A ten-year-old child can do all of the following at an accident scene except ____. A. carrying out first aid techniques properly B. keeping calm and helping others remain calm C. calling for help and keeping talking to the injured

D. keeping the injured warm and warning others of the danger B

There' s a world of difference between a horror movie and a comedy—the former scares you half to death while the latter leaves you rolling on the floor with laughter. But try watching them without the background music. You just decide they're not so different after all.

Music and movies have been intertwined since the beginning of motion pictures, even before the voices of actors were recorded. In movies, music helps to provide a sense of time and place, convey ideas about the characters and, most importantly, draw emotions out of the audience.

Studies have long shown that our heart rates and anxiety levels rise and fall depending on the speeds of the music we hear. Film composers armed with this knowledge will use sudden changes in music speed to arouse fear among audiences. Slowing the speed of the music will have the opposite effect, bringing about a sense of peace.

The use of dissonant (不协调的) tones and noises is another technique that heightens tension. Humans naturally become unnerved (不安的) when we hear dissonant sounds because such noises are usually associated with danger, like those that animals make to warn against predators(捕食者). As a result, countless horror movie soundtracks use instrument combinations like double basses (重低音) and high, screeching (尖利的) violins.

As crucial as it is, the best film music is subtle. All that audiences are supposed to feel is a heightened sense of emotion—they shouldn't realize what caused it. Only when the music is taken out of the film should audiences understand its effects.

In keeping with this-principle, some filmmakers are even using what's called \"infrasound (次声波) \" to arouse fear. While we may not be able to hear it because its frequency is below the range of the human ear, infrasound has been proven to cause anxiety, shivering (颤抖) and even sorrow. For example, infrasound was used in the soundtrack of the 2007 horror movie Paranormal Activity, and audiences reported extremely high fear levels despite the lack of action throughout the movie. \"It doesn't affect everyone equally,\" said British science writer Philip Ball, but he predicted that \"we will see more of it used in movies in the future\". 55. What is the article mainly about?

5

A. The effects of using infrasound in movies.

B. The differences between horror movies and comedies. C. Why it is important to use background music in a movie. D. How filmmakers make use of music to affect our emotions.

56. The underlined word \"intertwined\" in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to____. A. well prepared B. closely connected C. meant to attract attention D. changed gradually 57. To arouse fear among audiences, film soundtracks ____.

A. have no music B. slow down the speed of the music

C. use dissonant tones and noises D. use instrument combinations like pianos and guitars

58. According to the article, infrasound ____. A. is not easy for the audience to notice B. makes the audience feel at peace C. has the same effects on all audiences D. is used to make up for the lack of action in movies

In the past two decades, the Chinese economy has undergone many reforms in an effort to compete more effectively on the international market. These reforms included allowing foreign banks to offer credit cards to Chinese citizens. Now, researchers at the University of Missouri (MU) have found about 30 % of Chinese urban households now own at least one credit card and the growth rate of credit adoption has been an average of 40 % per year between 2004 and 2009. Rui Yao, an assistant professor of personal financial planning at MU, says that this large growth in such a small amount-of time has positive and negative implications for the Chinese economy.

\"With more and more people taking advantage of credit cards in China, it certainly increases potential consumer buying power,\" Yao said. \"However, we found that more than 90% of credit card users were unaware of safety issues existing in credit card use and more than 60% had little knowledge of the consequences of credit card debt. This lack of knowledge could create problems as credit card ownership is expected to grow at a. rate of 11 % a year. \"

Yao found that while 72 % of Chinese credit card holders were never late on their payment, only 55% were able to pay the full balance. She also found that 70% of Chinese credit card holders said that credit cards contributed to overspending.

Yao believe that Chinese could benefit from financial education designed to help them plan for their financial future and encouraging the Chinese to take advantage of debt in a responsible fashion is important for the Chinese economy. \"Appropriate use of debt can help households improve their quality of life as well as spur economic growth through an increase in market purchases,\" Yao said.

59. Why did China allow foreign banks to offer credit cards to Chinese citizens? A. To respond to the urgent demand for financial reforms. B. To increase Chinese citizen's confidence in economy. C. To improve competitiveness in the international market. D. To persuade more Chinese citizens to accept credit cards. 60. A lot of figures are used in the text in order to ____.

6

A. record the valuable data. B. provide concrete evidence C. introduce a research method D. give a detailed description 61. It can be inferred from the text that ____.

A. education is the only solutions to future financial issues B. overspending is mainly brought about by credit cards C. most Chinese credit card holders can't pay the balance D. some Chinese citizens lack knowledge of credit risks

Historians have always believed that it was Vasco Da Gama, the Portuguese explorer that sailed around Africa to India and back between 1497 and 1499, who first began trading with East Africa. However, the recent discovery of a rare coin in Kenya, may make them rethink that theory. The 600-year-old copper and silver disk that has a hole in the center possibly to be worn on a belt, was discovered in early December 2012, on the very first day of a three-month dig (考古发掘) conducted on the island of Manda, Kenya, by Charles Kusimba from Chicago's Field Museum and Sloan R. Williams from the University of Illinois.

Researchers believe that .the coin, which was issued between 1403-1425 and bears the name of Emperor Yongle, head of the Ming Dynasty, proves that it was the Chinese, not the Portuguese who were the first to discover and trade with the eastern coast of Africa. They think that it may have been Commander Zheng He, who was known to have gone on several sea journeys to explore the lands bordering the Indian Ocean to try to increase Chinese trade and political influence.

However, following Emperor Yongle's death, the relationship stopped because the new leaders were not forward thinking and banned all international trading. This is what paved the way for European explorers like Vasco Da Gama and Christopher Columbus to discover new worlds and trade in goods like ivory and silk.

The coin is currently being authenticated (证实) by experts to ensure that it is indeed a real coin issued by the Chinese emperor. If it proves to be, the researchers will head back to the Island at the end of this year, to see what other important information about the trading relationship between Europe and Asia they can dig up at what is believed to be the oldest site in Sub-Saharan Africa.

67. Who first traded with East Africa according to historians?

A. Vasco Da Gama. B. Zheng He

C. Christopher Columbus. D. Emperor Yongle 68. What does the discovery of the old coin probably suggest?

A. China was the trade center in the world in the Ming Dynasty. B. Commander Zheng He was the first to sail in the Indian Ocean. C. It was the Chinese who first traded with the eastern coast of Africa. D. The Portuguese were the first to discover the eastern coast of Africa. 69. What can be known from the passage?

A. It took the researchers three months to discover this 600-year-old coin. B. The coin has not been proved to be a coin issued by the Chinese emperor.

C. The researchers have gone back to the Island to find other important information. D. Emperor Yongle's death prevented Christopher Columbus's discovering new worlds. 70. The author writes this passage to ____.

A. tell people how to discover old coins B. show us how great our ancestors were C. introduce a newly-found coin in Kenya D. explain the meaning of a new discovery

There is no denying that we are eager for golden chances to be successful in life. However, many people are not aware that chances are always for those who get well prepared. I didn’t realize it until I went to high school.

Soon after I became senior one student, a singing competition was to be held in school. I love singing but I was very shy then and had never sung at the top of my voice in public. I could only sing to myself most of the time. Somehow, I wanted to have a try. When I talked about it with my parents, they inspired me to follow my inner voice and told me as long as I got well prepared, I would make it. With their encouragement, I became confident and practiced hard after class. Sometimes, I would turn to my music teacher for help. When I felt I was ready, the day came. Standing on the stage, I took a deep breath and began to sing with my full emotions. It turned out that I won the first prize .

This experience has taught me a precious lesson in my life. If you are not successful yet, most probably you haven’t been well prepared. Once you have, chances will surely favor you. 听力录音稿: Text 1: W: Hey, Mike! What are you doing here?

M: Mary! I don’t believe it! We’re here at the same wedding. John and I are colleagues. W: What a coincidence! I work with Lucy. Text2: W : Can you play tennis with me today, Bob?

M : Yes, I like to listen to some music. At present my major objective is to learn from others. W : Do you like classical music or pop?

M : I like both. How do you spend your spare time then, Lily? W : Playing the piano is my favorite activity.

M : Our hobbies are similar to each other. I hope we can often exchange experience together. W : So do I, but I am weak in the theory of music.

M : Me, too. Would you like to go with me to visit my uncle? He’s a professor of the Institue of

Music.

W : I’m glad to go with you. I would ask him for his advice. Text 10: W: I understand the majority of foreigners working in Britain are au pairs(互惠生). What is the attraction do you think?

M : Well, it is an excellent system, you know. In exchange for a little help round the house. It gives the girls not only free accommodation but a splendid environment to learn the language. W : It may well have been that way before, but does the system work like that now? It’s become

more of a business now, hasn’t it? In many cases it merely gives the families a chance to make money from the girls, without giving the girls a chance to learn the language.

M : Not at all. It is a very good way, you know, of bringing people of different nationalities together. And anyway, the girls continue to come over in the thousands.

W : Yes, but don’t they complain that they find it hard to meet English people, especially people of

their own age?

M : I’m not sure that is so. The interesting thing is that in spite of everything the girls are really

quite content, there is evidence for this, you know.

W : Yes , that is all very well, but don’t you think it’s surprising that very few of them keep in

touch after they go back home?
