I wonder if it’s because I haven’t been able to be outdoors for so long that I’ve grown so crazy about everything to do with nature. I can well remember that there was a time when a deep blue sky, the song of birds, moonlight and flowers could never have kept me spellbound. That’s changed since I came here.

One evening when it was so warm, I stayed awake on purpose until half past eleven in order to have a good look at the moon by myself. But as the moon gave far too much light, I didn’t dare open a window. Another time five months ago I happened to be upstairs at dusk when the window was open. I didn’t go downstairs until the window had to be shut. The dark, rainy evening, the wind, the thundering clouds held me entirely in their power. Charlie Chaplin， a famous comedian，brightened the lives of Americans and British through two world wars when they felt depressed, so they could feel more content with their lives. Up to now nobody has been able to do this better than him.

Born in a poor family, Charlie Chaplin was taught to sing and dance as soon as he could talk and walk so that he could earn his own living with his parents, who were both music hall performers. Unfortunately, when he was five years old, his father died, leaving his family even worse off. By his teens, Chaplin could mime and act the fool in a subtle way . With time going by, he became more and more popular. Once he played a tramp who wore a moustache, wornout shoes and wide trousers, walking around stiffly. This character was a social failure but was loved for his optimism and determination to overcome difficulties.

John Snow was a famous doctor in London and he became inspired when he thought about helping

ordinary people exposed to cholera, which was a deadly disease of its day. Many thousands of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak because neither its cause nor its cure was understood. He knew it would never be controlled until its cause was found. He believed one theory which suggested that people absorbed the disease into their bodies with their meals. He tried to prove this. So when another outbreak hit London, he began to gather information and made a map, marking where all the dead people had lived. It was valuable. And finally he concluded that the water was to blame. Then

John Snow looked into the source of water. He found all the deaths were linked to polluted water. So he was able to announce with certainty that polluted water carried the virus. To prevent this from happening again, John Snow suggested that the source of all the water supplies be examined and new methods of dealing with polluted water be found. Finally “King Cholera” was defeated.

No.4 The United Kingdom (地理介绍)

People may wonder why the UK consists of four countries, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. You can clarify this question if you study British history.

Great Britain got its name when England and Wales were joined to Scotland. The Northern Ireland was connected to them in the 20th century in a peaceful way. To their credit, the four countries do work together in some areas. However, they have developed different educational and legal systems as well as different football teams.

England is the largest of the four countries and for convenience, it is roughly divided into three zones. While some industrial cities don’t have historical treasures, London is a place where cultural relics can be seen everywhere, as it has been influenced by different invaders. So if you are going to make a trip to the UK enjoyable and worthwhile, you must keep your eyes open.

It is easy for you to start smoking, but once you become addicted to it, you may find it hard for you to quit it. Firstly, you may become physically addicted to nicotine. Secondly, you may develop the habit of smoking and finally become mentally addicted to it.

It not only affects your physical fitness, but also does harm to your heart and lungs and causes a variety of diseases. So it is important for one to quit smoking and live a healthier life. There is no doubt that the earth is becoming warmer and that it is human activity that has caused this global warming rather than a random but natural phenomenon. All scientists subscribe to the view that the increase in the earth’s temperature is due to the burning of fossil fuels. However, the attitudes of scientists towards this rise are completely different. On the one hand, some scientists think that the trend which increases the temperature would be a catastrophe . On the other hand, Others are opposed to this view and predict that any warming will be mild with few bad environmental consequences, for more carbon dioxide will make plants growing quicker and encourage more greater range of animals.
