April 03,2021 Dear Sir/Madam,

Over the past 6 months, the service from the garbage collection truck has been very disappointing. We have complained to the truck driver, but he has done very little to solve the problems. Therefore,I am writing directly to your department to request your help.

Basically, there are two problems. The first is that the truck never follows the correct time schedule.Your notice says that garbage will be collected in our area from Monday to Friday at 6 p.m.,but the truck always either arrives to a early or too late.It has been as much as 15 minutes early and 25 minutes late. The second problem, which is more serious,is that the truck moves off too quickly.I have seen people running after the moving vehicle almost every time, making a disaster very likely. What if the person running were pregnant, disabled,or elderly?

As I mentioned at the beginning,we did express our concerns to the driver. The first time we spoke to him,he was very kind.He explained very patiently that the department was trying to make a better time schedule. After that, he just started ignoring us.Honestly speaking,I felt this was very rude of him and unprofessional.

If these problems continue,I am worried that residents will start dropping their trash on the corner of the street. Therefore, for both the safety and health of everybody,I hope that you will look into this matter as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully, Tsai,Chia-wen tsai.ch@pmail.com

Wild elephants can tell whether a voice comes from a man, woman or boy,a new study says. That's what researchers found when they played recordings of people for elephants in Kenya.Scientists say this is an advanced thinking skill that other animals haven't shown. It lets elephants figure out who is a threat and who isn't.The result shows that the clever animals are also studying people, said study author Karen McComb.

\\McComb,a professor at the University of Sussex in England.\\must build up that knowledge somehow.\\

The study was released on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

9 / 13

It's close but not quite like the Dr.Seuss book, where the elephant Horton hears something that others can't hear. McComb and colleagues went to Amboseli National Park in Kenya, where hundreds of wild elephants live among humans, sometimes coming in conflict over scarce water. The scientists used voice recordings of Maasai men, who on occasion kill elephants, and Kamba men,who are less of a threat to the elephants. As a result, the elephants reacted defensively—retreating and gathering in a bunch—more to the Maasai language recording because it was associated with the more threatening human tribe, said study co-author Graeme Shannon.

They repealed the experiment with recordings of Maasai men and women.Since women almost never spear elephants, the animals reacted less to the women's voices. The same thing happened when they substituted young boys' voices.\his kind of time distinctions in human voice patterns is quite remarkable,\\Emory University animal cognition expert Frans de Waal, who was not part of the study. 24.Who were the people taking part in the study? A.Frans de Waal and Karen McComb. C.Dr.Seuss and Graeme Shannon.

B.Graeme Shannon and Frans de Waal. D.Karen McComb and Graeme Shannon.

25.What can wild elephants benefit from their special ability? A.Identifying and avoiding possible danger. C.Having a better understanding of humans.

B.Crowing much faster than any other animals. D.Developing their language skills.

10 / 13

26.Which can replace the underlined word \\ A.distinguish

B.repeat

C.use

D.compare

27.What does the passage mainly talk

about? . A.Wild elephants can

distinguish between human languages. B.The conflict between humans and wild elephants is growing. 4

C.Wild elephants use language skills to make discrimination. D.Wild elephants can build up good memory and learn tricks. C

The biggest challenge faced by travelers especially those who like to have a backpacking trip is how to ensure a steady supply of clean clothes. Now,thanks to a great invention called Scrubba Wash Pack, that worry may be a thing of the past.

The portable washing machine was invented by Ash Newland in 2021,while planning to climb Mt.Kilimanjaro. Struck by the limited packing space,he got inspiration from traditional washboards to create a hag that could be used to clean clothes. Then he quitted his career as a lawyer and focused on perfecting the bag's design.By 2021,the bag was ready for the public. It weighed only 180 grams and required very little storage space, making it perfect for anyone wishing to travel light.

11 / 13

Not surprisingly, the bag worth 55 dollars was in instant hit with travelers, university students and even passengers. However,Newland was not satisfied. He still saw a disadvantage with his invention—dirty clothes had to he carried around in a separate bag!The recently introduced Scrubba Wash Pack solves that problem.

In order to make the pack active, dirty clothes are placed inside the bag along with two or three liters of water. The bag is then shut tightly to ensure all air is squeezed out and the clothes are massaged for a few minutes. After a quick wash, they are clean and ready to be dried.According to Newland, the pack can clean anything from jeans to smelly socks! What's even more amazing is that with a capacity to hold 13-liters of water,it can be used to wash more clothes at a time.

The best pat is that the 99-dollar pack that will be available for sale later this year, only weighs 300 grams and is completely foldable, making it easy to store when it's not in use. With the Scrubba Wash Pack, wandering through foreign cities searching for a washing shop,or paying for washing machines may soon be a thing of the past! 28.What led Ash Newland to create the Scrunba Wash Pack? A.His job requirements. B.A traditional washboard.

C.His interest in invention. D.His personal experience. 29.Why wasn’t Ash Newland satisfied with his former invention? A.Clothes couldn't be washed well.

B.The invention was not so convenient. D.The cost of the invention was very high.

C.The bag couldn't contain enough water.

12 / 13

30.It can be inferred that the improved Wash Pack______. A.turns to be much environmentally friendlier

B.will replace the traditional washing machines 5
