To begin with, being a vegetarian helps us to stay in a good health condition. Take myself as an example. I used to eat meat, and I found myself tired every day after lunch. That’s because digesting meat requires more energy than digesting vegetables. Later, I decided to be a vegetarian, and now I no longer feel sleepy after lunch. Also, according to experts, vegetarians live 4 years longer compared with those who eat meat.
Apart from its benefit for individuals, being a vegetarian is also good for our environment. Experts have made it clear that the process of animal raising consumes a large amount of water and energy, and produces a great deal of carbon dioxide. Furthermore, it is reported that every year, countless animals are slaughtered for food. This is particularly true in China, where animal welfare is not a very big concern for the farmers. If we eat less meat, then fewer animals will suffer such a miserable fate.
All in all, when we abandon eating meat, we will find ourselves healthier, and we can contribute to environment protection. This is a good thing, for both individuals and the society as a whole.
The Drawbacks to Being a Vegetarian It seems that currently, it is a trendy thing to be a vegetarian. Many of my friends are turning to vegetarianism, too. But is it really a good thing? After careful consideration, I believe that going for vegetarianism is not as good as it looks, since it hurts our health, and does harm to our economy.
First of all, being a vegetarian does not mean being healthy. It is known to us all that we need to intake various nutrients in order to stay healthy, and there are some nutrients which are only contained in meat. So if we only eat vegetables, we will not have a balanced diet. In the long term, this may result in diseases and malnutrition. Besides, my aunt always complained that she felt weak every day in the afternoon when she was a vegetarian. That’s probably because vegetables cannot offer us enough energy for our daily activities.
Also, believe it or not, it’s not a good thing for our economy. The meat industry is an important one in our economy. There are many farms in rural areas where farmers raise pigs, cows and chickens, and the transportation and sales processes also provide us with many jobs. If more people refuse to eat meat, these workers might be laid off, and the meat industry will be severely impacted.
If we take these two points into consideration, we can safely come to the conclusion that being a vegetarian has several shortcomings, including its influence on our health, and our nation’s economy. So we should put this trend in perspective.
