Sweetest Day is always the third Saturday in October. This holiday is much more important in some cities than in others. It is a holiday that is becoming popular every year throughout the country.
Sweetest Day is on the third Saturday in October as a day to make someone happy. It is an occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, old, and orphaned, but also friends, families and partners whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.
Over 60 years ago, a Cleveland man, believing that the city’s orphans and shut-ins (卧病在床的人) too often felt forgotten and ignored, came up with the idea of showing them that they were remembered. He did this through the distribution of small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors, he distributed these small gifts on a Saturday in October. During the years that followed, other Clevelanders began to take part in this activity, which came to be called \"Sweetest Day\". In time, the Sweetest Day idea of spreading joy to the poor was broadened to include everyone, and became an occasion for remembering others with a kind act or a small gift. And soon the idea spread to other cities all over the country.
Sweetest Day is not based on any single group’s religious background or on a family relationship. It is a reminder that a thoughtful word or deed enriches life and gives it meaning. 26. Sweetest Day is intended to_________.

If your vocabulary is limited, your chances of success are limited.
One of the easiest and quickest ways to get ahead is by building up your knowledge of words. The vocabulary of a person almost stops growing by the middle twenties. From then on, it is necessary to have an intelligent plan if progress is to be made. No casual hit-or-miss methods will do.
The study of words is not just something that has to do with literature. Words are your tools of thought. You can’t even think at all without them. Try it. If you are planning to go downtown this afternoon you will find that you are saying to yourself, “I think I will go downtown this afternoon.” You can’t make such a simple decision as this without using words.
Without words you could make no decisions and form no judgments at all. A pianist may have the most beautiful tunes in his head, but if he had only five keys on his piano he would never get more than a part of these tunes out.
The study of words is not only to improve the processes of your mind. It will give you confidence; lend color to your personality; increase your popularity. Your words are your personality. Your vocabulary is you. And your words are all that we, your friends, have to know and judge you by. You have no other medium for telling us your thoughts--for making us believe, persuading us, giving us orders.
31. How to make progress in vocabulary in one’s mid-20s? A. By planning wisely B. By finding some useful methods
C. By thinking to be successful D. By learning to be smart
32.Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. Words help us think. B. Words enable us to become popular.
C. Words help us make decisions. D. Words add colors to our life.
33. According to the passage, how can a person be judged? A. By his thoughts B. By his words C. By his popularity D. By his personality
34. What does the underlined word “medium” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. assistant B. means C. helper D. vocabulary 35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. The ways to study words B. The choice of words C. The study of words D. The use of words

It was the first day of class. Two of her new ESL classmates wanted to know where Tara was from. They were both from Iraq. Because Tara looked Iraqi, one of the women asked Tara, in English, if she was from Iraq. Tara replied, “No, I'm not.” Then the women took turns asking Tara if she was from Iran, or Syria, or Jordan. To each question, Tara responded with a simple no. Laughing, one woman said to the other, “She's not from anywhere!” The two went to their desks, talking to each other in Arabic.
The next day, the teacher divided the students into groups of four. The students in each group asked introductory questions of each other. A student in Tara's group asked her, “Where are you from?” Tara answered that she was from Iraq. The two women who had questioned Tara the day before were sitting only a few feet away, who heard Tara's response.
“Aha!” they both shouted. “You ARE from Iraq!” Tara smiled and said yes. Then she apologized to both of them for lying the day before. She explained that she had not wanted to get into an Arabic conversation with them. It had been her experience that many ESL students continued to speak their native language in ESL class, and Tara had not come to ESL class to practice her Arabic. In her opinion, ESL students should try to speak English only. “I agree,” said Rose.
“You're 100 percent right,” agreed Jennifer. “Rose and I must stop speaking Arabic to each
other. Right, Rose?” Rose nodded, and then said something in Arabic. All three women laughed.

Tourists have always taken selfies(自拍) of themselves at Sydney's landmarks, but on a day that has horrified the city, many people are taking pictures for old times' sake as well.
All day people were uploading selfies of themselves on Twitter from as close as possible to where the hostage rescue(人质营救) was taking place.
Just to make the photos more real, some even took them with television cameras in the background. A young couple even looked like they were taking a celebration selfie than one at a hostage siege. Others smiled happily as if they were standing in front of Sydney Opera House instead of a horrible hostage crisis.
The hostage siege has been going since 10 a.m. on Monday with as many as 30 people believed to be held against their will by a gunman in a central Sydney cafe.
Not that it stopped people taking selfies in the area. However, the thoughtless actions have raised many objections on Twitter, with many users blaming the people for putting up their selfies.
One person wrote: “Terrible! Do they not have any feelings. People are being held hostage
and all they can do is take a selfie.”
“I love a selfie, but how is this ok?” said another.
“Don't go home and hug your loved ones and be grateful that you're not caught up in a hostage nightmare… go to the scene and take a selfie.” one Twitter user wrote.
It's unlikely that those improper pictures will be taken down from these accounts no matter
how the hostage crisis ends. 41. According to the passage, what were people doing at the scene of the hostage siege? A. sending their selfies on the Internet B. helping the police rescue the hostages
C. writing events of the hostage siege D. talking about the hostage siege

C. Because they didn’t know there were television cameras behind them.
D. Because they wanted to make their friends believe they were actually at the scene. 43. What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 8? A. People shouldn’t go home and hug their families. B. People should go to the scene and take a selfie. C. People should put up their selfies on Twitter.

B. Stop Taking Selfies, Please! C. A Hostage Crisis D. Café in the Hostage Rescue

A new study suggests that listening to music in the office improves the speed and accuracy(精确度) of tasks such as data entry, proof reading and problem solving.
In an office-based experiment, 88 percent of people were found to do their best work when listening to music. The study also found that 81 percent completed their fastest work when music was played. And it matters what type of music you listen to. For example, if you're filling your income taxpaying form, then classical music is the most effective as it improves maths skills.
Listening to Justin Bieber could also improve your speed, with 58 percent of people completing data entry tasks faster while listening to pop songs.
During proof-reading, dance music, such as David Guetta, had the biggest positive impact with people increasing their speed by 20 percent compared to tests taken with no music at all. Dance music also had a positive effect on spell-checking with a 75 percent pass rate compared to 68 percent when no music was played at all.
The research, done by Brighton-based Mindlab International, suggests that silent offices may be the least productive.
“The MusicWorks experiment showed a positive relationship between music and productivity--it showed that when listening to music, nine out of 10 people performed better.”
said Dr David Lewis, chairman of Mindlab International. 46. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Workers in the office like listening to different kinds of music. B. Music helps improve workers’ performance in the office. C. Dance music has a positive effect on spell-checking. D. Silent offices are the least productive.
47. Which of the following words has the closest meaning with the underlined word “impact”(Paragraph 4)?

B. Listening to dance music helps people have a higher pass rate on spell-checking. C. Silent office workers may not perform as well as those with music played. D. Most people completed their work faster while listening to music. 50. We can infer from Dr David Lewis that________.
