To Be National Is to Be International
As the fashionable saying goes “To be national is to be international”, referring to that the world we are living in is becoming a global village. What used to symbolize the typical national customs, costumes or even the food or dishes are nowadays shared and appreciated by all the nations throughout the world because of the fantastic speed of globalization and the establishment of cultural pluralism.
Take Chinese “Qipao” for example. Thanks to its unique design, colorful fabrics and distinctive sewing tricks, it always attracts a large circle of people, especially women for its charming taste. Another example is “Peking Opera”, which is labeled with “Chinese Traits”. People are fascinated and appealed to by its tune, versions, rhythm and rhyme, costumes and musical instruments, which are the Chinese classics surviving through hundreds of yeas and represent our culture and history.
With the quickening pace of the fused-cultures of all the nations throughout the world, we have no reason not to cherish, carry on and develop the outstanding culture and history with unique national elements because it also symbolizes our world---- the global village. (183 words)
Should We Encourage Private Cars or Public Transportation?
1. 有些人主张大力发展 私家轿车
1
2. 另一些人提倡优先发展公共交通
3. 我的观点
One of the controversial issues today is whether we should encourage private cars or public transportation. Though some people believe the quick development of private cars is the symbol of the boom of our economy, I will argue that priorities should be given to the development of our public transportation system. When it comes to the issue whether we should develop private cars or public transportation, opinions vary from person to person. Some people hold the opinion that we should develop private cars, while others advocate that we should develop public transportation. As to me, I agree with the second view. The reasons for my view are as follows.
One reason for this is that China is a country with the largest population in the world. If only 10 % of its population possess a car, this will make the roads overcrowded and congested while giving priorities to the public transport development will not only help ease the traffic jams, but also improve the living environment and realize sustained development. Besides, some public transportation systems such as subways and light ways cause less pollution since they are driven by electricity. The most important reason for my argument is that public transportation system can carry more passengers, which fits the situation in our country where what we need is not more cars but cars with more people.
2
Of course, the development of private cars is inevitable but based on the densely populated condition of our country, it is vital to give our preference to the development of public transportation system.
The Best Way to Reduce Stress (for reference) 1.在我们的日常生活中不可避免地会遇到一些压力,人们对付压力的方法也不
尽相同
2.我的最佳方案是……
Inevitably, we all face a certain amount of stress in our lives. While modern life offers us many conveniences, it also requires us to deal with pressure and frustration in daily life. It is important for all of us to find a way to relieve this stress in order to live happy and healthy lives. Some people prefer to engage in physical exercise by running or playing a sport, and some feel more relaxed after watching TV or even sleeping.
As for me, I find that the best way to reduce stress is to spend time with family and friends. One reason I prefer to spend time with others is that their company is a pleasant distraction. When under stress, if I spend time alone, I may continue to dwell on my problems. Sharing good times with family or friends, on the other hand, helps me to forget my worries. Another reason is that I have an opportunity to discuss my problems. Their advice is often helpful because they can see my
3
situation more objectively than I can. Furthermore, simply talking about my problems often makes me feel better.
Finally, spending time with others reminds me of what is important in life and helps me to keep things in perspective.
For all of these reasons, I believe that the best way to reduce stress is to spend time with others. Because it helps me to relax and keep life in perspective, it is the method I prefer when faced with difficulties in lives. But no matter what method we choose, it is important to find an appropriate way to relieve pressure. Only in this way can we lead well-balanced lives.
Write a composition on the topic Say No to Jaywalking. You should write at least 150 words, based on the outline given in Chinese below. 1. 乱穿马路现象在一些城市相当普遍
2. 这一现象产生的主要原因
3. 如何杜绝这一现象
One will never fail to notice the fact that nowadays jaywalking has turned from an illegal practice into a commonplace one in many cities of our country. According to a recent poll, more than 80% of the people surveyed admitted they had once done so. What are some of the factors involved and measures we should
4
take to cope with this problem?
Jaywalking originates from a general slackening of self-discipline with everyday behavior. Many citizens regard it as a minor issue and have no idea that it is actually against the traffic law. Meanwhile, the laws and regulations are far from being fully observed in a practical sense. All these lead to the frequent occurrence of jaywalking.
This problem can be accounted for by a couple of factors, both individual and social. For one thing, some citizens are lack of self-discipline and regard jaywalking as a minor issue. For another, traffic laws and regulations are not fully observed. All these lead to the frequent occurrence of jaywalking in our society.
Jaywalking is far from a minor bad habit but a fact forbidden by law, so the offenders should be punished when they are caught. However, it is my own personal view that prevention is better than cure and so a good education program about the observation of traffic regulation is one of the most important steps any government should take.

To Leave or Stay, My Choice on Graduation?
1. 大学毕业时学生有多项选择
5
2. 一些毕业生想离校找工作,另一些想留校进一步深造
3. 我的打算是…
To hunt for a job or to pursue further study is a controversy among many college graduates. Some students plan to leave school to find a job for they believe four-year academic training has well prepared them for future career, but if I should make the choice I would prefer to continue my education for a higher degree.
This preference can be explained by a couple of factors. For one thing, I am keenly interested in my subject and university is a good place to do more research. If I stayed here for another couple of years, I would surely get further insights into the field where I study. For another, the development of society demands people with better qualifications. The higher degree one holds, the more competence one may have. Above all, with several more years at school, I will be a better-educated person with surer control of myself and a better understanding of the world. Naturally, it will be easier for me to find a more satisfactory job in the future.
Therefore, I am now working hard on postgraduate entrance exams. Though it means more time and money will be spent, I firmly believe it is well worth the efforts and costs.
The Two Sides of a Mobile Phone
6
1. 当今手机的使用变得越来越普及
2. 手机的优点和可能产生的副作用
3. 我对手机使用的看法
As a product of modern technology, a mobile phone is being more and more widely used. Being small in size, light in weight and easy to carry, it offers fast and convenient service for the world’s communication. However, as is the case with many issues, a mobile phone has both positive and negative aspects.
On the positive side, a mobile phone allows calls to be made instantly from almost any location. This can be vital where emergency services need to be called. Another underlying benefit is its convenience for social or business purposes. If one travels to a business meeting on a delayed train, a call can be made from the train to inform others of his situation. Moreover a mobile phone can serve as a connection to the Internet, which can be extremely convenient for obtaining information.
On the negative side, the fact that a mobile phone allows a person to be contacted at any time can in itself be a disadvantage. Another disadvantage is the perceived health risks associated with its use. Some people believe that using mobile phones for long periods can damage the brain. Still another disadvantage is the nuisance it can cause at times when the sound of a phone ringing is irritating, such as in the classroom, or at the theater.
7
No sensible man will deny that a mobile phone has both benefits and drawbacks but on balance perhaps the merits of a mobile phone outweigh its demerits since a mobile phone has become an integral part of modern life.
写作:
The chart unveils the change in the number of senior citizens in our country in the years between 2003 and 2030. As can be seen, the number of elderly people will increase from 132 million in 2003 to 200 million in 2015, and then to 400 million in 2030. Obviously our country is stepping into the era of the so-called “aging society”.
A couple of factors account for this change. One reason is that the rising living standard and the improvement of health care make people live longer than ever before. Physical exercises or colorful life can be another reason for their long life span. The major reason is that the education in hygiene and popular medicine helps people know how to protect themselves and keep healthy.
To help the elderly, the chief task lies in taking care of them and helping them take care of themselves. As everyone will be old some day in the future, all the members in the society should join their hands in creating a favorable environment for the old people. Social infrastructure such as nurseries should be built and the service be enhanced. The old people themselves should never stop pursuing whatever they view as important in life since it is not the years in your life, but the life in your years that counts.

1. 有些大学允许学生自由选择某些课程的任课教师
2. 学生选择教师时所考虑的主要因素
3. 学生自选任课教师的益处和可能产生的问题
Nowadays, some universities in our country are open to students to choose their favorite lecturers for certain specific courses. This freedom renders students a more flexible and more efficient way of learning. At least, active learning can be expected.
However, several factors should be taken into consideration for our students when picking out their ideal teachers. On the one hand, the lecturer’s academic fame and practical knowledge play an important role in the decision. An ideal lecturer should impart profound knowledge to his students. On the other hand, students should have acquaintance with the lecturer’s characters. A good lecturer will set a good model for students to follow, who should be appreciated by the students.
Of course, free option of lecturers may bring about a lot of advantages to students, such as cultivating students in self-involvement in classroom activities and pressing lecturers for improving their teaching quality. But some unexpected problems will occur and should be considered to perfect this new reform in

education. In a word, serious consideration should be taken to this newly-born matter. ( 176 words)

These courses enrich our college life and provide our students with more new windows to have access to knowledge. However, as for the purpose of choosing electives, different students have different purposes.
Some students choose more selectives just to get more knowledge, so that they could be well-prepared in the future job market. Some students just want to extend their interests. And some others admire the famous lecturers, thinking that celebrities will render more inspirations and insights for us.
As far as I am concerned, I just want to broaden my horizon for my future life and job. I don’t care about the scores I have got. Besides, I just want to be a man having a sharp and imaginative mind with different knowledge which is beyond

Limiting the Use of Disposable Plastic Bags
1. 一次性塑料袋曾经广为使用
2. 由此带来的问题
3. 使用一次性塑料袋的意义
Ironically, the once-boasted-20th-century’s most exciting invention----Plastic bags will be banned. Hence, limiting the use of disposable plastic bags has been brought to popular attention in China. No one would deny that it was a real convenience in our daily life. However, what would our society be like with the excessive use of them?
The sharp increase in using plastic bags has given rise to such problems as environmental pollution. It takes many years for plastic gas to be absorbed by soil, which blocks the drainage system and causes water pollution. What’s worse, some poor-quality plastic bags have extremely harmful to public health.
12
Awareness of the matter in question is one thing, but more important to us is the step of how to cope wit it. From June 1st this year, using of disposable plastic bags in supermarkets is limited strictly. Consequently, people come to take environment-friendly cloth bags and the business cost in supermarkets is cut down as well. Only in this way can we protect both the environment and our own health.

第一篇: The Relationship between Wealth and Happiness
1. 财富是人们共同的追求
2. 财富与幸福的关系
3. 结论
Wealth has always been what some people long for. It is true that most of them try to acquire wealth by means of honest labor. Their efforts contribute to the welfare of the society and at the same time to the accumulation of their wealth, and hence to their happiness.
There is no doubt that wealth brings happiness, especially in the modern society. Various kinds of up-to-date household appliances, latest fashions and recreations make their appearance with each passing day. All this makes our life
13
more comfortable and colorful. Therefore, without money we cannot turn admiration into reality.
Wealth, however, can also lead to disasters, if we have an inappropriate approach to it. Besides, a person may lose his reason and go astray if he intends only to seek wealth and indulges himself in leading a luxurious life. For example, there are some government officials who take advantage of their positions to take bribes from the people turning to them for help. Obviously, wealth may bring us disasters if we don’t take a proper attitude to it.
In my opinion, on no account can we equate happiness with wealth. I also believe that one should never reckon only on wealth to achieve happiness.
第二篇 Foreign Fast Food
1. 洋快餐在中国受欢迎的现象
2. 洋快餐在中国受欢迎的原因
3. 洋快餐存在的问题
Foreign fast food, like KFC and McDonald, is very popular nowadays. It is food that has already been prepared, such as hamburgers, fried chicken and potato chips. With the fast living pace, foreign fast food, which is easy to get and eat, becomes more and more welcome among people. People like to buy foreign fast
14
food because of its convenience. It saves people time and energy. You can either eat it in the restaurant or take the food out and eat it at home, at work, or in a park. What’s more, its taste is different from that of traditional Chinese food. So it is particularly popular among the children.
However, the foreign fast food has its disadvantages. It is more expensive than the Chinese fast food and it has less nutritive value than Chinese food. Those who eat foreign fast food frequently are more likely to suffer from stomach troubles and easy to put on weight. So it’s better for people to eat less fast food in order to keep healthy.
第三篇 On Advertisements
1. 人们对于广告的不同看法
2. 在你看来当今广告业存在哪些问题
3. 应该如何去解决这些问题
People hold different attitudes towards advertisements. Some think that advertisements give up-to-date information about products. On the other hand, there are still some other people who believe that advertisements do not give us any useful information but try to persuade us to buy the things without which we can still live happily. There are even a large proportion of people who hate advertisements, especially TV advertisements because TV advertisements often
15
interrupt the wonderful programs they are enjoying.
As far as I am concerned, I think although advertisements enable us to make decisions quickly, sometimes they cause lots of troubles. For example, some advertisers use false advertisements to cheat customers, in which case, customers will suffer a great deal and even lose their lives. Sometimes, the products advertised are actually not so good as the advertisements claim to be. Moreover, some advertisements are vulgar in both pictures and words, and therefore have negative impacts on young people. There are still some other advertisements which mislead people because they do not portray the reality but give us unrealistic expectations.
It’s necessary for the government to make a law on advertising to set the standard for advertisements to get released. Some supervisory institutions should also be established to supervise advertisers in case they give false advertisements to trap customers.
第四篇 How to Reduce Stress
1. 现代社会人们的压力与日俱增。
2. 2. 压力产生的原因
3. 3. 减少压力的办法
16
With the constantly changing and quickening pace of modern life, many people are used to rushing through their life. People have learned to take it for granted that the stress is and will be increasing all the time. A certain degree of stress can promote our study and work, but too much stress is certainly harmful, and sometimes may even cause serious mental and physical problems.
Stress can come from every direction. For instance, it can come from sorts of competition with other people. It can come when we have too many things to do and too little time to do it. It can also come when we do not have enough money to pay for what we want. It can also come when we lack confidence and admire others.
There are many ways to help solve this problem, but the following may be the most effective. First, we should make a practical judgment on our own ability and do what we can do. Don’t set a goal that is too high because there are many things in the world that are beyond our reach. Second, we should learn to be considerate and tolerant. Do not try to change other people or other things. Everything has its own way in the world. Third, we’d better be not too keen on the material things. If you try to “keep up with the Joneses”, you burden yourself with stress and can walk no longer on the road to happiness. Do not harbor any jealousy, vanity, or resentment to others. Be satisfied with what we have. Finally, we should keep frequent communication with our relatives and friends. Talk with them what we want and think of. Share with them our happiness and misery. This all will help us to feel better.
17
These are not necessarily the only ways to deal with stress, and it is my hope that everyone can free from stress, both mentally and physically, and live a relaxed happy life.

On Social Security
1. 社会治安一直是我们关心的话题。
2.目前的社会治安状况还不容乐观。
3. 我的建议和看法。
Social security has long been the great concern of different levels of our government and the public, for the situation of social security will have an enormous impact on our work, study and life both directly and indirectly. We can not imagine how we can work, study and live normally under turbulent circumstances. Hence the significance of social security can never be overstated.
As a matter of fact, the present situation of social security is far from being satisfactory although we have taken various measures to protect people, institutions, etc. from being attacked. Almost every day we read or hear the news of robberies, murders, kidnappings, or even assassinations happening in different parts of the world. What is worse is that new crimes are committed with the
18
development of high technology, that is, computer crimes.
As far as I’m concerned, I think that our government should enforce the laws and regulations. In the meantime, we should punish the criminals more severely and radically. The most important thing is to educate people to comply with the laws and foster a sense of civilization in their minds. Only in this way can we have a secure society and work, study and live soundly.

My View on the Negative Effects of Some Advertisements
Nowadays, advertisements are very common in our everyday life. Advertising is really an effective method for manufacturers to make their products known to the public. However, there are some business advertisements which bring harmful effects.
In order to make more profit, some manufacturers exaggerate their products’ functions in the advertisements. That is, the product does not live up to the standard advertised and the consumers will find themselves fooled. In some cases, it may lead to more serious consequences. For instance, an exaggerated or even non-existing function of a medicine will perhaps endanger the patient’s life.
19
In my opinion, advertisements on the whole are good. But we should not neglect the negative effects of those bad advertisements. The government should firmly ban the advertisements with negative effects before they are released.

My View On Job-Hopping (跳槽)
“You resigned again?! What is your new job?” Job-hopping has become a hot topic among people, especially the young, and heated debates focus on it, as a result.
Many people are inclined to do one job in their lives. In their opinions, people who change their job frequently are superficial and tactless. They believe that the only way to success is to stick to one job, for constant practice in a professional field helps make an expert.
But there are still many people who won’t agree. They argue that change means progress. If you’re not satisfied with your present job, of course you have the right to replace it with a more challenging and better paid one. Every change is a step to further success. This idea may be the reason why they change their jobs so often.
For my part, I think it reasonable to change your job if you have a better opportunity. But once you have found a position where you can fully display your
20
ability, you’d better settle down and put your whole heart into in. Only in this way can you get the true joy of achieving your goals.

On Playing Truant
1. 目前,大学生中逃课现象很严重。
2. 产生这种现象的原因是…。
3. 我的个人建议是…。
“You haven’t attended class either?” Some students greet with each other in his way when they meet on campus. It seems that more and more students do not attend class, especially for some basic courses. Just like an infectious disease, playing truant among college students is getting amore and more serious.
Investigation reveals that some students are not interested in studies but in playing various PC games on line. Usually, they work overnight in a net bar and sleep during the day. On the other hand, the courses themselves are partially responsible for this phenomenon. Some courses, or textbooks, are outdated, which could not give us useful information or knowledge. Besides, the
21
conventional teaching methods can not arouse the students’ interests in learning. Instead, it results in tediousness and boredom, which in turn, aggravates the situation.
Personally, I think school authority should enforce the rules and regulations concerning school disciplines and warn, or even severely punish, those who offend or violate them. At the same time, teachers should exert their great efforts to readjust their teaching methods to attract students. Advanced teaching aids should be made best use of to improve our present-day teaching to a new level.

A Letter of Recommendation
To Whom It May Concern,
It gives me a great pleasure to recommend Li Lin to you as a candidate for the
22
vacancy in your school. Li Lin has been a student in my class for the past fours years, so I know her very well. She is a talented young student with a sense of responsibility. Her academic record is outstanding. She has been awarded the annual scholarship granted by the university.
Li Lin has a strong ability to organize people and is ready to help others. At the same time, she has showed great interest in teaching. She studied second language acquisition conscientiously and often talked with me after class about the questions that she had come across in her readings. As we talked, I found that she was very skilled in language teaching and learning strategies. Also, she has worked part-time as a tutor for two years, which has offered her enough experience to be a qualified teacher in your school. Worthy of mention is her personality, honest, reliable, responsible and mature.
I strongly recommend this promising young lady, and I am sure, with her experience, determination, and enthusiasm, she will excel in the position of teacher in your school.
第十篇 The Advantages of Trying New Things
Everyone likes to succeed at what he does, and it is more likely that we will succeed at things we already know how to do well. However, to limit ourselves to doing only those things which we are good at will cause us to miss many opportunities to develop other interests and skills. For this reason, I believe that it is to our advantage to try new things and take risks.
23
When we try something new we may fail. That is the risk that we take. But we can still learn something from our failure, even if it is only how to cope with failing. We may also succeed at a new activity and this will bring us a feeling of accomplishment and greater self-confidence. We may also discover a new interest that will bring pleasure to our lives or lead to a new line of work. Furthermore, it is not always possible to play it safe and do only those things that we know. We cannot control every situation and no doubt we will someday meet with challenges. If we already have the experience of testing ourselves in an unfamiliar situation, we will be better able to handle any situation which arises.
To sum up, trying new things and taking risks allow us to develop both our
skills and our personal interests. When we take a risk we cannot know beforehand what will happen, but if we try our best we are certain to gain something positive from the experience whether we win or lose.
第十一篇 Doing Things We Don’t Enjoy
Everyone has certain likes and dislikes, and there is no denying that we all prefer to do the things that we like. However, sometimes doing things we don’t enjoy can be beneficial for us, and sometimes it is necessary. Therefore, I agree that people should sometimes do things that they do not enjoy.
One reason is that some of the things that we don’t enjoy are good for us. For example, not everyone likes to exercise, but exercise is good for our health
and so we should all do it anyway. Likewise, not many people enjoy going to see a
24
dentist or a doctor, but it is good for us to take care of ourselves, so we should all visit dentists and doctors regularly for a checkup. Another reason is that, at times, the things we dislike are necessary. Students must take tests in order to complete their studies, and everyone must work in order to make a living. And finally, doing things we dislike can also open up new possibilities for us. Most people can probably remember hating a certain food when they were children even though they enjoy that same food now. So, when we do things we dislike, we may discover something we do like along the way, or simply find a better way to deal with the things we must do.
No one likes to do things he doesn’t enjoy, especially when there is no benefit in doing them. But doing things we don’t like can be good for us at times, and so I believe that we should sometimes give them a try.

1. 低碳生活是我们目前极力提倡的新的生活方式。它的含义是。。。
The low-carbon living style is what now we support greatly in our daily life. It refers to that people tend to make use of low-carbon content materials in our daily routine, including clothing, dieting, housing and transportation, etc.
2. 要实现这种新的生活方式,我们应该。。。
To create this new living style, we should first of all get rid of the old and

traditional way of living and try to find some new resources to replace the high-energy-consumption ones. For instance, we should take a walk or ride a bike more instead of driving cars when we go out if the distance is not a problem. We have to explore a new energy resource with less pollution, such as solar energy, hydroelectricity and wind-powered stations. The next important element is that we should make people be aware of the advantages or the benefits of the low-carbon commodities to the well-being of ourselves. Only in this way can we have an ideal, a healthy and long life.

第十三篇 On Keeping Pets
1. 养宠物越来越流行
2. 人们养宠物的原因是…
3. 养宠物产生的问题…
Nowadays, there seems to be a fever of keeping pets in our society. Along the streets towards evening, people in causal wear can be seen taking a stroll leisurely, not for themselves but for their dear pets. At social gatherings, gossips revolve around experience on taking care of pets. One is not surprised if a pet costs as high as one’ annual earnings.
26
People keep pets for good reasons. First, pets provide company. Considered human companions, pets make us happy and far from lonely. Besides, pets give us a sense of being important and needed because they depend on us for home, food and drink. Moreover, a pet in a family keeps us in touch with the more natural, animal world. Paradoxically, some people keep pets as suggesting their good social status.
Some problems cannot be ignored. The growing number of pets may cause serious hygiene problems. So pet-owners should be responsible for a clean neighborhood. In many public places pets should be forbidden to enter in case they spread disease and interfere with other people.
