Most people believe they don't have much imagination. They are wrong.Everyone has imagination, but most of us, once we become adults, forgethow to access it. Creativity isn't always connected with great works of art orideas. People at work and in their free time routinely think of creative ways tosolve problems. Maybe you have a goal to achieve, a tricky question toanswer or you just want to expand your mind! Here are three techniques tohelp you.

This technique involves taking unrelated ideas and trying to find linksbetween them. First, think about the problem you have to solve or the job youneed to do. Then find an image, word, idea or object, for example, a candle.Write down all the ideas/words associated with candles: light, fire, matches,

wax: night, silence, etc. Think of as many as you can. The next stage is torelate the ideas to the job you have to do. So imagine you want to buy afriend an original present; you could buy him tickets to a match or take himout for the night.

Imagine that normal limitations don't exist. You have as muchtime/space/money, etc. as you want. Think about your goal and the newpossibilities. If, for example, your goal is to learn to ski, you can nowpractice skiing every day of your life (because you have the time and themoney). Now adapt this to reality. Maybe you can practice skiing every dayin December, or every Monday in January.

Look at the situation from a different point of view. Good negotiators(谈判者) use this technique in business, and so do writers. Fiction writers oftenimagine they are the characters in their books. They ask questions: what doesthis character want? Why can't she get it? What changes must she make to getwhat she wants? What does she dream about? If your goal involves otherpeople, put yourself \"in their shoes\". The best fishermen think like fish!55. According to the passage, when we become adults______.

A. we can still learn to be more creative. B. most of us are nolonger creative.

C. we are not as imaginative as children. D. we are unwilling tobe creative.

56. The second technique suggests that you just imagine_____.

A. setting a goal is as simple as skiing.

B. you have every resource to achieve your goal. C. new possibilities will soon appear.

D. December and January are the best months for skiing.

57. The phrase “put yourself in their shoes” in paragraph 4 is closest in

meaning to_____.

A. dress yourself like them. B. do as they ask you to. C. think as they would. D. put on their shoes,

58. We learn from the third technique that a good salesman should ask

himself:

A. what do I usually do? B. what did my boss tell me to do?

C. what are my customers' needs? D. how should I sell myproducts?

C

Do you want to live forever? By the year 2050, you might actually get

your wish—if you are willing to leave your biological body and live insilicon circuits (半导体电路).But long before then, perhaps as early as2020, some measures will begin offering a semblance of immortality (虚拟的永生).

Researchers are confident that technology will soon be able to trackevery waking moment of your life.Whatever you see and hear, all that yousay and write, can be recorded, analyzed and added to your personalchronicles (履历), By the 2030, it may be possible to catch your nervous(神经) systems through electrical activities, which would also keep yourthoughts and emotions.

Researchers at the laboratories of British Telecommunications havegiven the name of this idea as Soul Catcher.Small electronic equipment willmake preparation for Soul Catcher. It would use a wearable supercomputer, perhaps in a wristwatch, with wireless links to micro sensors under your scalp(头皮) and in the nerves that carry all five sensory signals. So wearing avideo camera would no longer be required.

At first, the Soul Catcher's companion system —the Soul Reader —might have trouble copying your thoughts in complete details.Even in 2030,we may still be struggling to understand how the brain is working inside, soreading your thoughts and understanding your emotions might not bepossible. But these signals could be kept for the day when they can betransferred to silicon circuits to revitalize minds everlasting entities (永生实体).Researchers can only wonder what it will be like to wake up one dayand find yourself alive inside a machine.

For people who choose not to live in silicon, semblance of immortalitywould not be as useless as they thought.People would know their liveswould not be forgotten, but would be kept a record of the human raceforever. And future generations would have a much fuller understanding ofthe past.History would not be controlled by just the rich and powerful,Hollywood stars, and a few thinkers in the upper society.59. The main idea of this passage is that _______.

A.human beings long for living forever

B.there are many difficulties in making the Soul CatcherC.people can live forever as technology developsD.the invention of Soul Catcher has great importance60. According to this passage,a Soul Catcher will be ______.

A.a new machine on which research measures have already been

made

B.a new invention in order to catch and keep human's thoughtsC.made by British scientists to offer something that looks likeliving forever

D.made of silicon circuits which can catch people's nervousactivity

61. We can infer from the passage that semblance of immortality is

______.

A.to be a reality sooner or later B.far from certain

C.just an idea that couldn't t be realized at all D.a fading hope

62. The meaning of the underlined word \"revitalize\" in the fourth

paragraph is close to ___. .

A.make dead B.make famous C.make known D.makeactive

Being able to multitask is hailed by most people as a welcome skill, butnot according to a recent study which claims that young people between theages of eight and eighteen of the so-called Generation M are spending aconsiderable amount of their time in fruitless efforts as they multitask. Itargues that, in fact, these young people are frittering(浪费) away as muchas half of their time as they would if they performed the very same tasks oneafter the other.

Some young people are using an ever larger number of electronicdevices as they study. At the same time they are working, young adults arealso surfing on the Internet, or sending out emails to their friends, and/oranswering the telephone and listening to music on their iPods or on anothercomputer. As some new device comes along, it is also added to the list ratherthan replacing one of the existing devices. Other research has indicated thatthis multitasking is even affecting the way families themselves function asyoung people are too wrapped up in(沉湎于) their own isolated worlds tointeract with the other people around them. They can no longer greet familymembers when they enter the house nor can they eat at the family table.

All this electronic wizardry(魔力) is supposedly also seriously affectingyoung people's performance at university and in the workplace. When askedabout their opinions of the impact of modern gadgets (小装置) on their

performance of tasks, the great majority of young people gave a favourableresponse.

The response from the academic and business worlds was not quite aspositive. The former feel that multitasking with electronic gadgets bychildren affects later development of study skills, resulting in a decline in thequality of writing, for example, because of the lack of concentration on taskcompletion. They feel that many undergraduates now urgently need remedial(补救的) help with study skills. Similarly, employers feel that young peopleentering the workforce need to be taught all over again, as they have becomedeskilled.

While all this may be true, it must be borne in mind that more and moreis expected of young people nowadays; in fact, too much. Praise rather thancriticism is due in respect of the way today's youth are able to cope despitewhat the older generation throw at them.

63. With the introduction of new gadgets, what happens to the

Generation M's present e-devices?

A. They give way to the latest. B .They are quickly put aside. C. They are sold to their friends. D. They become part of theircollection.

. Multitasking makes the Generation M______.

A. feel lonely add pitiful. B. selfish and aggressive. C. distant to their family. D. silent and sad.

65. The academics feel that many undergraduates badly need to____.

A. adjust their social attitudes. B. seek psychological assistance. C. improve their study skills. D. take more business courses.

66. What attitude should the older generation adopt towards the

multitasking youth?

A. Critical. B. Thankful. C. Negative. D. Supportive.

A woman from Japan was telling a friend about her trip to the UnitedStates. The woman had visited major businesses and investment companies inNew York City and Chicago.

“I studied English before I left home,” she said. “But I still was not surethat people were speaking English.”

Her problem is easy to understand. Americans in business are likepeople who are in business anywhere. They have a language of their own.

Some of the words and expressions deal with the special areas of their work.Other expressions are borrowed from different kinds of work such as thetheater and movie industry.

One such saying is “get your act together”. When things go wrong in abusiness, an employer may get angry. He may shout, “Stop making mistakes.Get your act together.” Or, if the employer is calmer, he may say, “Let us getour act together.”

Either way, the meaning is the same. Getting your act together is gettingorganized. In business, it usually means to develop a calm and orderly plan ofaction.

It is difficult to tell exactly where the saying began. But, it is probable that it was in the theater or movie industry. Perhaps one of the actors was nervous and made a lot of mistakes. The director may have said, “Calm down, now. Get your act together.” Word expert James Rogers says the expression was common by the late 1970s. Mister Rogers says the Manchester Guardian newspaper used it in 1978. The newspaper said a

reform policy required that the British government get its act together. Now, this expression is heard often when officials of a company meet. One company even called its yearly report, “Getting Our Act Together.”

The Japanese visitor was confused by another expression used byAmerican business people. It is “cut to the chase”. She heard that expressionwhen she attended an important meeting of one company. One official wasgiving a very long report. It was not very interesting. In fact, some people atthe meeting were falling asleep. Finally , the president of the company said,“Cut to the chase.”

Cut to the chase means to stop spending so much time on details orunimportant material. Hurry and get to the good part. Naturally, this sayingwas started by people who make movies. Hollywood movie producersbelieve that most Americans want to see action movies. Many of their moviesshow scenes in which the actors chase each other in cars, or in airplanes or onfoot. Cut is the director’s word for stop. The director means to stop filming, leave out some material, and get to the chase scene now.

So, if your employer tells you to cut to the chase, be sure to get to themain point of your story quickly.

67. After the woman visited the Untied States she might feel that

__________.

A. her English was poor B. It’s easy to master English

C. it’s difficult to make money D. people there weren’t veryfriendly

68. In which situation could the words “get your act together” be used?

A. A task is completed successfully B. Players perform badly in a match.

C. Audience is satisfied with the actor’s performance in a movie.D. Visitors make a tiresome and unpleasant trip to someplace.

69. What do the sayings “get your act together” and “cut to the chase”

have in common?

A. Their uses B. Their meanings C. their origins D. theirpopularities
