Tips on How to Survive the Exam Season

When it comes to the exam season, a lot of you may feel stressed, depressed or even want to escape. Here we have pieces of advice to help you get it through. ①__________.

During the semester, going to lectures and taking a lot of notes are the first steps in the learning process. Now, at the end of the week, gather all the notes you took during the week and run through your notes quickly.②__________If yes, great. If not, you have a lot of time left to understand before the exams take place. You can ask a friend, a teacher, you can look it up on the Internet or go to a library. This takes a little effort, but the results are great. Switch between different types of revision.

. ③__________Something that really helps is to plan different types of active studying while revising. You can, for example, study using flashcards for an hour, then work on the summary for an hour, then have lunch, etc.

Make the facts more relatable.

There are many different ways to do so. I’m going to give you two examples and the first one is to create vivid images, which can be really helpful for studying history. ④__________The second is to make yourself familiar with new words by looking for words that look alike in other languages.

Teach and learn outside of the classroom.

In my experience, teaching is the most efficient way of studying. By explaining the materials to yourself or to someone else, you’ll remember them a lot better.⑤__________The idea is to sit down and take turns explaining certain topics of the study material. Test yourself with past papers. At the end of the whole study process, you should prepare yourself to do past papers properly. Time yourself, don’t cheat, and mark it as if it were your real exam. Pay attention to the mistakes and revise the part you didn’t do well on until you can’t get it wrong any more. A. Prepare yourself in advance.

B. Make sure to be tough on yourself.

C. Even if you are motivated to study, everyone gets bored after a couple of hours of studying.

2

D. While doing this, constantly ask yourself, “Do I understand what I am reading?”

F. Try to imagine how the event took place and this allows you to remember certain details more accurately.

G. Look for a study buddy or small study group, and discussed everything you have studied before the exam.

Bad News for the Highly Intelligent

There are advantages to being smart. People who do well on IQ tests tend to be more successful in the classroom and the workplace. They also tend to live longer, healthier lives, and are less likely to experience negative life events.

①__________ In a study, Ruth Karpinski and her colleagues carried out a study on the members of Mensa, a high IQ society. The study covered mood (情绪) disorders and anxiety disorders. Respondents were asked to report whether they had ever suffered from each disorder. The researchers compared the percentage of those who reported disorder to the national average and found that Mensa’s highly intelligent members were more likely to suffer from a range of serious disorders. To explain their findings, Karpinski and his team bring up the hyper brain and hyper body theory. This theory holds that, for all of its advantages, being highly intelligent is associated with psychological and physiological “overexcitabilities”, or OE.②__________This can include anything from an astonishing sound to conflict with another person. According to the theory, OEs are more common in highly intelligent people. A highly intelligent person may overanalyze a disapproving comment made by a boss, imagining negative outcomes that simply wouldn’t occur to someone less intelligent.③__________

The results of this study must be interpreted cautiously. Showing that a disorder is more common in a sample of people with high IQs than in the general population doesn’t prove that high intelligence is the cause of the disorder.④__________All the same, the findings set the stage for research that promises to cast new light on the link between intelligence and health. One possibility is that associations between intelligence and health outcomes reflect pleiotropy (基因多效性), which occurs when a gene (基因) influences seemingly unrelated

characteristics.⑤__________In a 2015 study, Rosalind Arden and her colleagues concluded that the association between IQ and living longer is mostly explained by genetic factors. From a practical standpoint, this research may lead to insights about how to improve people’s psychological and physical well-being.

A. Now there’s some bad news for those smart people.

B. There is already some evidence to suggest that this is the case.

C. It is an unusually strong reaction to an environmental threat or abuse.

D. Scientists did many researches to understand the reasons behind the advantages.

E. That may cause the body’s stress response, which may make the person even more anxious. F. It’s also possible that people who join Mensa differ from other people in ways other than just IQ. G. They found that the differences between the respondents were seen for mood and anxiety disorders. 10.根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Do teenagers know how to sleep? If you’re the parent of teens, you might be laughing to yourself. That’s all they know how to do. In truth, teens might not know enough about how to sleep, when to sleep and why. ①__________

Just as we focus on our diets and exercise for health, we need to consider sleep necessary to our mental, physical and psychological health. “Good” sleep is sleep that is long enough to allow your brain to remove the side effects of daytime brain activity. Teens are social creatures, and the most attractive social “gathering” place these days is on their digital devices. ③__________. Ideally, we should avoid blue light for at least half an hour before bed. But social media and homework that requires screen time mean too many kids are powering up their devices when their bodies should be powering down for the night.

④__________Equally contributing to sleep issues are eating too late, taking naps, and failing to get enough exercise. In other words, these people never learned how to sleep.

Over time, poor sleep leads to a decline in mood. ⑤__________Significantly, when I speak to my adult patients who are struggling with sleep issues, nearly all of them say their sleep problems started in high school.

Therefore, I recommend sleep education. Otherwise, we won’t necessarily solve the health, safety and economic issues of sleepy teens.

A. When they are disturbed, our sleep is affected

B. Going to bed too late is only one part of sleep problems C. Being exposed to blue light from our screens delays sleep

D. Current school schedules allow for about seven hours of sleep a night

③ To show that he has killed a lion, a man will paint his body with a natural white material, making special marks to represent this accomplishment. The Masai men also use this white to show that they are no longer boys and are considered adults.

One quite unusual example of face painting is done by the Wodaabe people of West Africa. Once a year, they have a beauty contest for men.④ Then they add white and black circles and lines.
