Film cameras and digital cameras work in a similar way. After all,a film camera is basically a light-proof box. It has a lens system to focus light onto the film at the back of the camera. Let‟s suppose that we are outside on a beautiful summer day trying to take a picture of the family dog. We are using a film camera and finally get the dog still. You point the camera at him. Light goes into the camera lens and hits the shutter. In other words, nothing happen yet.

Now let‟s say the dog looks really cute and you decide to snap a picture. When you press the button, the shutter opens for a very short period of time. A small amount of light passes through and hits the film at the back of the camera. This creates all upside-down image on the film. When

http://www.ltjiajiao.com

蓝天家教网 http://www.ltjiajiao.com 伴您快乐成长

you finish the roll of the film, you can take it to a photo shop to develop it and you will have a great picture of your dog.

Camera comes with different lens lengths. Many small cameras have shorter focal lengths, which means that there is a small distance between the lens and the place where the light focuses at the back of the camera. This gives you a large view of the area you are taking a picture of. Lenses with a long focal length show a small area but allow you to focus on a long distance objects and make them bigger. They are often called tele photo lenses. A good example of a long focus lens is one that is used by sports photo graphers to get photos of football players as if they were standing right beside them.

In digital cameras, the light falls not on the film but onto a sensor called a CCD.(Charge Coupled Device). This digitally converts light and color into a digital in formation or pixels(像素). The CCD is the heart of any digital camera and usually the most expensive part depending on how good it is.

56. Which of the following statements is true?

D. the sensor fails to convert light and color into a digital information

58. The main reason that spots photographers can get clear and big pictures of players is that A. they use digital cameras.

B. the lens of their cameras is excellent C. their focus lenses are short D. their focus lenses are long

59. Generally speaking,a digital camera‟s price is A. closely related to the quality of the CCD B. irrelevant to the quality of the CCD C. closely related to the lens. D. irrelevant to the lens

(B)

Within fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes(结合)for the recycling of waste. The word“rubbish”could lose its meaning because everything that goes into the dumps would be made into some-thing useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else.

The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber.

Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and sepa rating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this:first,it will pass

http://www.ltjiajiao.com

蓝天家教网 http://www.ltjiajiao.com 伴您快乐成长

through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that grounders and rollers break up everything that can be broken. Finally the rubbish will pass under magnets, which will remove the bits of iron and steel;the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage.

The first full-scale giant recycling plants are, perhaps, fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long. 60. The main purpose of the passage is

A. to show us a future way of recycling wastes B. to tell the importance of recycling wastes C. to warn people the danger of some wastes D. to introduce a new recycling plant

61. How many stages are there in the recycling process? A. 3 B. 4 C. 5 D. 6

62. What is the main reason for big cities to build their own recycling plants? A. To deal with wastes in a better way. B. It‟s a good way to gain profits.

C. It‟s more economical than to dump wastes in some distant places. D. Energy can be got at a lower price. 63. The first full-scale huge recycling plants

A. have been in existence for 15 years B. takes 15 years to build

C. can‟t be built until 15 years later D. will remain functioning for 15 years

Land, unlike labor and capital, has a special feature:It is in strictly fixed supply in total. Because of this,we say that its price is demand-determined. In other words, the price of land is determined completely by what families and firms are willing to pay for it. But not all the land is the same. Some land is more valuable than other land. The value of land to a potential user may depend upon the characteristics of the land itself or upon its location.

Consider the potential uses of a piece of land in a suburb of Kansas city,Allan wants to build a clothing store in that place. He estimates that he can earn economic profits of$ 10,000 per year there because of the land‟s excellent location. Bella, another person interested in buying the land comes, believes that she can earn$35,000 in economic profits if she builds a drug store there. Clearly,Bella will be more likely to get the land.

Because location is often the key to profits,„landowners are frequently able to squeeze their renters. One of the most popular locations in the Boston area, for example,is Harvard Square. There are dozens of restaurants in and around the square, and most of them are full most of the time. Despite this seeming success. most Harvard Square restaurant owners are not getting rich, because they must pay Very high rents for the locations of their restaurants. A large part of the restaurant‟s revenues goes to rent the land.

Although the supply of land is generally perfectly fixed, the supply of land in a given use may not be so. As the population of a city grows, housing developers find themselves willing to pay more and more for land. As land becomes more valuable for development, some farmers sell out,and the supply of land that can be used for development increases.

Russian tradition orders that men should kiss each other three times on the cheeks at official functions. Now,a new ruling in Moscow is calling for politicians in the capital to stick to the old handshake. According to Britain‟s The Telegraph newspaper, politicians in Moscow have been told to stop kissing each other when they meet because the“kissing ceremony”takes so long.

Leonid Brezhnev, the general secretary of the Communist Party from 19 to 1982,was famous for treating male colleagues to a full lip-lock. One photograph of him kissing Erich Honecker, the leader of the Democratic Republic of Germany, was used for a protest painting on the Berlin Wall with the caption:“Oh,God,help me survive this deadly love”.

Kissing three times on the cheeks at official occasions is a Russian tradition. The practice has been revived among high-ranking officials in past years. In the distant past,a kiss from the tsar (emperor)was the highest sign of recognition. The Moscow ruling, however, has prompted authorities in other cities to consider banning the practice.

Alexei Kleshko,a parliament member in Siberia, said :“Single-sex kisses should be avoided, including at official meetings. It‟s enough to shake hands. Of course,if one is talking about a long friendship or fatherly relations,it might be OK to embrace. But that‟s the maximum that should be allowed. ”

Another MP Vladimir Gorlov, said he only allowed himself to kiss the hand of a woman at work:“There are informal relations and there are meetings governed by proto col,”he said. “When a man is kissing another man at an official event,I have a negative attitude towards it;There are rules of decency. ”

The past ages of man have all been carefully labeled by anthropologists‟(人类学家的) descriptions like“Paleolithic Man”,“Neolithic Man”,etc, neatly sum up whole period. When the time comes for anthropologists to turn their attention to the twentieth century, they will surely choose the label“Legless Man”. Histories of the time will go something like this:in the twentieth century, people forget how to use their legs.

The surprising thing is that they didn‟t use their legs even when they went on holiday. They built cable railways, ski lifts and roads to the top of every huge mountain. All the beauty spots on earth were damaged by the presence of large car parks.

The future history books might also record that we were deprived(剥夺)of the use of our eyes. In our hurry to get from one place to another,we failed to see anything on the way. Air travel gives you a bird‟s-eye view of the world or even less if the wing of the aircraft happens to get in your way.

When you travel by car or train,a blurred image of the countryside constantly smears the windows. Car drivers,in particular, are forever obsessed with the urge to go on and on. They never want to stop. Is it the lure(吸引力)of the great motorways,or what? And as for sea travel,it hardly deserves mention.

When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing:you live mainly in the future be cause you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place. But actual arrival, when it is achieved. is meaningless. You want to move on again.

By traveling like this, you suspend all experience; the present ceases to be a reality:you might just as well be dead. The traveler on food,on the other hand, lives constantly in the present. For him traveling and arriving is one and the same thing:he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the present moment with his eyes. his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical weariness. He knows that sound, satisfying sleep will be his:the just reward of all true travelers. 72. Anthropologists label nowadays men“Legless”because A. people forget how to use their legs. B. people prefer cars, buses and trains

C. lifts and escalators prevent people from walking D. there are a lot of transportation devices
