Neil Jordan,a conservation biologist, has come up with a novel method for protecting cattle from African lions: paint eyes on their behinds. The lions will think their intendedprey(猎物)has seen them and will give up,since they've lost the element of surprise.
This psychological trickery has been called \"iCow\actually not as strange asit sounds. The eye-like patterns on butterfly wings are known to prevent preying birds andwoodcutters in Indian forests wear masks on the backs of their heads when working todiscourage hungry tigers.
The inspiration for the iCow strategy came while Jordan was based in a village inBotswana, when two lionesses were killed by local farmers to revenge their cattle's death. The African lion is a vulnerable species, with numbers dropping from over
100,000 in the1990s to about 30,000 today.Much of that decline is due to these kinds of revengefulkillings because farmers have no effective strategies for protecting their herds.
\"Lions are hunters that like to attack by surprise. They move slowly, quietly, andcarefully to their prey, get close, and jump on them unseen,\"he said. When Jordan waswatching a lion follow an antelope one day,he noticed the lion gave up the hunt once theantelope spotted it.
So he joined one of the local farmers on a 10-week trial
study, painting eyes on one-third of a herd of 62 cattle. When the cattle returned each night, they took a head count tosee how many had survived.Only three cows were killed by lions during this period-allwithout the painted eyes on their behinds. And all the painted cows survived. However,Jordan warned that so far this is just a promising idea.He is now back in Botswana for amore ambitious study, equipped with GPS devices to better monitor the movement ofpredators(捕食者)and prey.
24.The iCow strategy is designed to. A.kill the lions B.scare off Predators C.identify cattle D.have fun
25.When hunting, lions like to. A.give up halfway B.hesitate to take action C.chase their prey steadily

A.badly behaved B.likely to attack C.easily cheated D.easily damaged
27.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Neil Jordan got the inspiration from the patterns on butterfly wings.
B.In the 10-week trial study, more cattle were killed. C.The iCow strategy is likely to bring great benefit.

D.The farmers will continue to take their revenge on the lions. C
The shower,I find,is the best place to cry.The water covers the sound of
mysadness, while washing away any evidence of my pain.I shower after the kids have gone tobed;it's the only time I can be alone.
I always did my best to protect my two children from my tears. If I needed to cry,Icried by myself.Yet,I encourage my two boys to cry.My 7-year-old prides himself onnever crying at school.\"Oh,but you must cry,\"I insist. \"Crying is good.It gets thesadness out.Never hold back your tears.\"
But then I did just that. What might it do to them to see their mother upset? Then myfather died, and there was no way I could schedule my grief and keep my feelings inside.Itried to get on with things, but the sadness still came. The realization that my dad wasactually gone hit me with an intensity(紧张)that was impossible to cover up.To mysurprise,my boys didn't seemtoo http://www..com/doc/b113341666.html,ter,they

I realized that in hiding my pain,I was only denying what it means to be human,I felt as if I had led my sons to believe that \"negative\" emotions are only a concept, and not something they should possess. It's one thing to tell my children it's OK to cry. It's another to show them how it's done.We owe that to our children, according
to
social
researcher
and
author
BreneBrown.During her TED talk,Brown said,\"It's necessary we be seen—deeply seen\".
\"Our job is not to protect our children,to keep them perfect,\"said Brown.\"Our job is to look and say,‘you're imperfect, and you're made for struggles, but you are worthy of love and belonging’.\"

Vinegar makes salad, fries and dumplings taste better, and
you can even use it to clean yourwindows. And now, according to scientists,it may even the planet’s population survive climate change.
Researchers from the RIKENCenterforSustainableResource Science (CSRS) in Japan found that growing plants in vinegar makes them more resistant to droughts. This could mean that in the future, worries about climate change affecting the world’s supply of food will be much lower. The discovery was made after the researchers studied the Arabidopsis,a plant known for its ability to survive in dry weather. It was found that when the plant was placed in drought-like conditions,it produced a chemical called acetate(醋酸盐)—the main component of vinegar.
After discovering this, the scientists experimented further by adding acetate to thesoil of other plants, before they stopped giving them water completely. After leaving the plants for 14 days, they found that the ones treated with acetate had survived, while theuntreated plants had dried up and died.
It's hoped that this simple method of survival could soon be used to help farmers in dry countries keep their crops alive.\"In the experiment,we targeted the staple foods of theworld—rice, wheat and maize—and the basic plant of breeding species,rapeseed(油菜籽),\" Jong Myong Kim,co-author of the study, told Popular Science magazine.
Kim also told the magazine he's already been in touch with people all over the
worldwho are interested in trying this simple and cost-effective method out for themselves fromflower growing companies to amateur gardeners.Although at this point keeping thirstyplants alive isn't as easy as just pouring vinegar over them,Kim said he and his team areworking on making the
process as simple as possible.\"Now we are trying to cooperate withsome farmers, and also some companies,to make a method to apply this system,\"he said. And for those of us who always forget to ask our neighbors to water our plants when wego away, hopefully this means the end of returning home from a trip to find our favoriteflowers have died.
32.What is the article mainly about? . A.The world's food supplywill be increased. B.Plants better survive droughts.
C.The Arabidopsis is resistant to droughts. D.Vinegar could be used to fight droughts. 33.It was discovered that acetate can. A.be used by farmers to replace soil B.only be produced by the Arabidopsis C.help plants survive dry conditions D.be used to improve poor soil
34.What are the target plants of the experiment? A.all breeding species. B.wheat and Arabidopisis. C.rice and maize.
D.rapeseed and Arabidopisis.
35.Jong Myong Kim's experiment of trying out the method. A.can make people's trips pleasant B.turned out a worldwide success
C.is as simple as pouring vinegar over the plants D.appeals to many flower growing companies 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Sometimes people call our society a “throwaway society”,which means that we'rethrowing away old things and buying new ones.Sometimes you may don't need something, but someone else may just need to buy one.For example, if your baby doesn't like histoycar any longer, why not give it to a nearbyfamily who has a little kid? Here are someother ways to help save resources for the society:
※Use the other side of the paper.
※Use rechargeable batteries for your electric toys,MP3 players and cameras ※Choose reusable cups instead of disposable paper or plastic cups.
※Take your own cloth shopping bags when you go shopping. ※ Drink boiled tap water instead of buying bottled water.
And there are some things you can exchange with your others, for example, books, toys, even clothes. It's a way for everyone to get something useful without spending any money and without throwing things away.
