The more people I meet, the more I love my dog. Every day I am reminded why I love him so much.
Three weeks before Christmas in 2008 at about 2:00 in the morning, my dog woke us up out of a sound sleep because someone was knocking at our door. He barked in front of me as if to protect me from the stranger who was knocking. My husband answered, and it was a local police
officer telling us that my father-in-law had called the police because he forgot our number. My mother-in-law was suffering from a brain disease and was in the hospital. We thanked the officer and raced to the hospital. We would have taken him, but the hospital would consider him to be a dirty pet.
After visiting the hospital we drove home and hugged our dog once more. At this point it was unlikely that little dog remembered waking us up. What he did remember was that we left him alone for several hours and he missed us. He thought we missed him, too, so he greeted us at the door with his tail wagging (摇摆).
Someone tried to break in our house that summer, but, once again, our little dog saved the day. Our curtains were damaged, but no one got in. When I got home from work, I found parts of my curtains lying on the floor. We called the police and the officer said that he did a great job.
My dog is a loving sweet dog who just wants some attention. I worked with him for months and now he sits, dances, sings, shakes hands, and so much more. The best part is he looks out for me as much as I look out for him.
My husband says the dog is spoiled (宠坏的); I say he finally has a loving home. 21. The author’s dog woke her up to tell her that _____.
A. her mother-in-law was ill B. her father-in-law called her C. someone was knocking at the door D. someone had broke into her house 22. Why did the police say the dog did a great job?
A. The dog saved the author. B. The dog stopped the thief. C. The dog did well what people told it. D. The dog helped to find the thief. 23. The purpose of the text is to tell readers _____.
A. why the author’s dog is her best friend B. what the proper attitude towards dogs is C. what dogs can bring us D. how to raise dogs B
Levi Strauss did not invent jeans, but he is considered the first person to make and sell great numbers of them. He was born in Bavaria, an area that is part of Germany. In 1847 he and his family moved to the United States.
Levi Strauss opened a small dry goods store, first in New York, then in San Francisco, California. Among the products he sold were jeans. These pants were especially useful for miners
in California. They needed clothing made from a strong material. Jeans are usually made from a heavy cotton cloth called denim.
Levi Strauss partnered with a clothing maker named Jacob Davis. Davis had invented a process for making rivets (铆钉) for jeans. These little metal connectors helped hold the pieces of cloth together to make the jeans stronger.
In 1875, the government gave Strauss and Davis a patent (专利) for their invention. That meant no one else could legally copy it without their permission. In 1928 the Levi Strauss company registered (注册) the word “Levi’s” as a trademark for their product.
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington has one of the oldest known pairs of Levi’s.
Writer James Sullivan published a book called “Jeans: A Cultural History of an American Icon.” In the book, he says jeans show two American values, creativity and rebellion.
Cowboys wore jeans in the old Wild West. In the 1950s, people saw famous Hollywood actors like James Dean and Marlon Brando wearing jeans in movies.
Today jeans come in blue but also lots of other colors and in many styles and at all prices. 24. Which of the following about Levi Strauss is TRUE?

Many of the inventions that form part of our everyday lives had their roots right here in the UK. Let’s take a look at some of the most important inventions. The bagless vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器) James Dyson, 1979
There are some things we don’t know we need until someone invents them. Step forward, the bagless vacuum cleaner. James Dyson came up with the idea after spending a lot of money on an expensive cleaner that simply pushed dirt around.
Most of us would have left it that, but Dyson went on to change the basic principle of a vacuum cleaner — an idea that hadn’t been challenged for 100 years — by designing a system that removed the necessity of the bag for good. His final version took five years of research.
However, when Dyson first approached manufacturers (制造商) with his idea, he couldn’t interest them. But he didn’t give up and set up a factory in Wiltshire in 1993 to produce them himself. Two years later, Dyson products were outselling the competition. The Mini Alec Issigonis, 1959
While the Americans were driving supersize Cadillacs, Britain famously went in the opposite direction and came up with a small car.
Alec Issigonis was responsible for the design and made a name for himself in motoring history with its launch (投放市场) in 1959 for the British Motor Corporation (BMC). The Mini’s success wasn’t overnight. Many thought it “strange”, but it developed into a love affair with the British that’s never decreased, helped by the fact that many stars loved it. The London sewage system (污水处理系统) Joseph Bazalgette, 1865
Like any major city, London has always produced large amounts of waste. Give thanks, then, to Joseph Bazalgette, an engineer who developed a far-reaching underground sewage system. It changed the process of getting rid of waste by dumping it into the Thames River. Even more impressive was his idea to construct pipes that would function for nearly 150 years and still be large enough to meet the need of an increasing population. As he said, “We’re only going to do this once.”
32. What do we know about James Dyson and his idea? A. His efforts paid off at last. B. He enjoyed immediate success. C. His idea attracted many manufacturers. D. He set up the first vacuum cleaner factory. 33. The Mini won its popularity _____. A. soon after its launch in 1959 B. because it was advertised by stars
C. with the help of some famous people D. because people lost interest in supersize cars
34. The underlined sentence “We’re only going to do this once” in the last paragraph shows Bazalgette was _____.
A. cautious B. confident C. far-sighted D. strong-minded
35. What did the three British inventors have in common?
A. Their success came after many failures. B. They influenced many other inventors. C. They made their inventions by accident. D. Their inventions changed people’s lives.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 If you happen to visit Venice’s world-famous St Mark’s Square in the next few months, you may notice something unusual. Among the thousands of gray pigeons (鸽子) around the square, are about 35 brightly colored ones. These birds are attracting worldwide attention. However, they are not miracles (奇迹) of nature. 71 The colored pigeons are Swiss artist Julian Charriere and German photographer Julius von Bismark’s contribution to the city’s 13th Architecture Biennale. 72 In order to get the color onto these birds, the artists created special pigeon
equipment. 73 The artists say that the birds are not harmed at all during the process (过程). They do believe, however, that making them look more attractive is beneficial to the birds since they are better respected by humans, who normally consider pigeons to be annoying.
Judging from the positive reaction these colorful birds are getting, the artists seem to have a point. 74 Even if most of us don’t like how they look, we shouldn’t change them as we wish. This of course is not the first time animals have been colored for the pleasure of humans. In New Zealand a farmer has colored his sheep pink to attract more tourists. 75 What do you think? Should we change the appearance of things that are not attractive to us just because we can?
A. They were once very helpful to humans.
B. In fact, they are works of “art” created by humans. C. Once the pigeon steps inside, it is immediately colored. D. There are many more examples in other parts of the world.
E. It provides a place for architects and designers to show new projects. F. The color-blind pigeons are not treated any differently by the other pigeons. G. However, many people believe we should leave the birds in their natural state. 注意:此题目答题卡涂在71-75空处
