The size of the British Isles often leads people to think that the languages spoken in its countries of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are somewhat the same. At first, visitors are often surprised to find that they have difficulty in understanding the accents and dialects of certain

3

regions. Even in England there are many different dialects.

Experts believe that for most English people, the places they come from are very important to them. Accents are clues to where people were born and where they grew up. Although some people may change the way they speak during their lifetime, most people carry at least some evidence of their accents and dialects throughout their lives. In addition to the regional accents of England, there can also be class differences among the accents. People are often able to make instant and unconscious judgements about a stranger’s class by listening to his or her accent. Both the words and the pronunciation of an individual reflect his or her social position.

It is agreed that in England, the kind of English spoken by a person plays a leading role that generally is not important in North America. The importance of accents and their cultural and social relationships are well represented in films and on television in Britain. The film My Fair Lady based on George Bernard Shaw’s 1912 play Pygmalion is often said to be a wonderful example of how social class and the accent were, and still are, linked in Britain. 61. Which statement is TRUE according to the passage? A. People from different regions speak different dialects. B. English people all speak the same language.

C. Visitors have no difficulty in understanding the dialects.

D. The British Isles include England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

62. Most people carry at least some evidence of their accents and dialects throughout their lives in order to .

A. show they don’t like standard English B. change the way they speak C. show the place they are from

D. show they are different from others 63 An Englishman’s accent . A. is a clue to where he was born B. is a clue to where he grew up C. reflects his social position D. all of the above

64. How do people in England know a person’s class?

A. By speaking to him. B. By showing something to him. C. By guessing. D. All of the above are wrong. 65. What’s the film My Fair Lady about? A. It shows how a boy learned English.

B. It is a love story between two lovers with different accents. C. It shows the relationship between people from different classes. D. It shows how social class and accent are linked in Britain.

Now, we know that if we do not get enough vitamins, we are at risk of developing a number of diseases. As a result, vitamin supplements(补品),though expensive, are popular with people who worry that they are not getting enough vitamins from the foods they eat. But contrary to what

4

many people think, medical experts have found little evidence that most supplements do anything to improve health or protect against disease.

In fact, medical experts warn that taking too many of some vitamins can be harmful. For example, too much vitamin E can cause bleeding. People should discuss what vitamins they take with their doctors, as some vitamins can produce harmful side effects when mixed with medicines.

Experts, however, do say that sometimes vitamins can help prevent disease. People who know they lack a particular vitamin should take vitamin supplements. Some older adults, for example, may not have enough vitamin B-twelve. This is because, as people get older, their body loses its ability to take it from foods. Also, people who spend much time inside may need some extra vitamin D as the skin makes this vitamin from sunlight.

Different vitamins are found in different foods. Vitamin A is found in fish liver oil. It also is in the yellow part of eggs. Sweet potatoes, carrots and other darkly colored fruits and vegetables contain substances that the body can change into vitamin A. Vitamin B-twelve is found in green leafy vegetables and other foods, like fruits. Vitamin K can be found in pork products.

In fact, for most people, a balanced diet can ensure enough of the vitamins our bodies need. So, it is important for us to eat a mixture of foods every day to ensure that we get enough vitamins our bodies need.

66. What is probably talked about before this passage? A. How many vitamins a person’s body needs. B. How many vitamins some foods contain. C. The benefits that vitamins bring to our health. D. What people should do to stay healthy.

67. Vitamin supplements are popular with people because ________. A. people mistakenly think that they are good for their health B. they contain more vitamins than the foods people eat C. food does not provide enough vitamins people need D. people fear that a lack of vitamins will lead to disease

68. From the passage, we can learn that medical experts advise people _________. A. never to take any vitamin supplements B. to depend only on food for their vitamins

C. not to take any vitamins together with medicines D. to consult doctors before taking vitamin supplements

69. For people who lack Vitamin B-twelve, they can eat more from _______. A. sweet potatoes B. pork products C. green leafy vegetables D. eggs 70. What would be the best title of the passage? A. Getting enough vitamins through a balanced diet. B. Vitamin supplements do harm to our health. C. Vitamins are important to our health.

D. Lacking vitamins can cause many diseases.

Most Americans believe that someone isn’t grown-up until the age of 26 and they should complete their education, have a full-time job, have a family to support and be financially independent. They also believe that becoming a real grown-up is a process which begins at about the age of 20

5

and takes about five years, according to the report from the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center.

The findings are based on a representative sample of 1,398 people over the age of 18 who were surveyed in person. The survey found that people expect the transitions to grown-up status to be completed at the following ages: age 20.9 self-supporting; age 21.1 no longer living with parents; age 21.2 having a full-time job; age 22.3 education completed; age 24.5 being able to support a family financially; age 25.7 getting married; and age 26.2 having a child.

“There is a large degree of agreement across social groups on the relative importance of the seven transitions,” said Tom Smith, director of the survey. The only obvious pattern of differences is on views about supporting a family, having children and getting married. Older adults consider these more important than younger adults do. This probably shows in large part a change in values across generations away from traditional family values. The most valued step toward reaching adulthood, the survey found, is completing education, followed by full-time employment, supporting a family, financial independence, living independently, and marriage. 71. According to the first paragraph, someone is a grown-up when he _______. A. has found a full-time job B. has finished his study in university

C. can make money and support himself after completing his education D. can support a family and be financially independent after graduation 72. A young man of 24 may be busy ________.

A. finding a job B. finding a girl friend

C. making money D. preparing for his wedding

73. The underlined word “status” in the second paragraph probably means “________”. A. position B. rank C. level D. situation 74. From the passage, we learn that _________. A. being grown-up is just a matter of age

B. being grown-up is a process which takes some time

C. all people think completing education means being grown-up

D. the survey found everyone had a different view about being grown-up 75. The best title for the passage should be “________” A. It takes a long time to grown up. B. Are we grown-up yet?

C. Getting married means being grown-up. D. Completing education means being grown-up.

[1] Hurt may occur at any time in our daily life, and forgiving someone who has hurt you or let you down is never an easy thing.Several new studies, however, say that it could have a lot of health benefits. When you think of forgiveness, you probably don’t think of it as being a health or medical problem.Studies from Stanford University,on the other hand, show that something like anger can harm your health.

[2] When cartoon book characters like the Incredible Hulk get angry, they change colors and often gain special power. In the real world, anger is less obvious and may be more dangerous.

6

That’s why Professor Fred Luskin, founder of the Stanford Forgiveness for Good, says being angry can harm your physical and mental health. Two new studies seem to show the same idea. [3] The studies find that people who are able to forgive feel less stress, less back pain, and less depression. They also have fewer headache, lower blood pressure, and fewer problems on sleeping.

[4] So it doesn’t matter if your anger is caused by the traffic or other things.Learning to let it go is important. Techniques such as deep breath or thought can help. Or just ask yourself if it’s worth hurting yourself by staying angry with someone else.

[5] Forgiveness does not mean that you simply accept what happened and say it’s OK. Instead,it’s a way of making peace with yourself about what happened in the past. 76. What is the advantage of forgiveness? (within 8 words)

80 Making peace with yourself about what happened in the past. 作文:Dear Jianhua,

I’m very glad to have received the letter you sent me two weeks ago. I’ve been thinking about the question you asked me. In my opinion, you should come back after you finish your studies abroad. For one reason, what you are studying is badly needed nowadays in China. It will be quite easy for you to find a good job. In fact, I know a few big companies in our city are hoping to hire people like you. For another reason, I think it will be much more convenient for you to look after your parents as they are getting old. Therefore, I think it’s a good idea for you to return. So what are you waiting for? Best wishes,

Minghua
