A Natural ways of keeping time
In ancient times, people had to use the sun and the moon to tell time. They got up when the sun came up and worked in the fields until the sun went down.
Man-made things
The sand clock is made of two glass balls joined by a narrow neck. The top ball was filled with sand. The sand slowly moved through the neck into the bottom ball. People knew how much time had passed when all the sand had fallen to the bottom ball.
People also made the water clock. They made a small hole near the bottom of a pot. Then they filled the pot with water. Markings inside the pot showed how much time passed as the water dripped (滴) out of the hole.
Nature’s Clocks in Living Things ◆Animals’ Body Clock
Animals do not need clocks to know time. They have a way of telling time by their bodies. Birds know when to fly to warmer places before winter. Some animals know when to keep more food for the cold winter months. Some fish know when it is time to move up the river and lay eggs.
◆Plants have their own clocks
Plants also have their own clocks to keep time. Plants know when to open flowers or when to drop their leaves.
◆The Body Clock in Human Beings

B AVERAGE RESOURCES If we put fresh water and sea water together, we can each have 620 620 mwater 3 m3 water. But remember, sea water is too salty for us to drink if the factories don’t process it first. So, 620 m3 is little. Saving water in daily use is important. There are 3.869 billion hectares(公顷) of forests on Earth. But we 0.5 hectares of forests are losing them mainly because we cut trees too much. All the corals that we have now spread for about 100,000 km in 109 countries. But each of us can only have such a little piece, because seas are getting polluted and corals are dying. According to the latest report, there are 200 billion stars in the Milky Way. Each of us can have 33 of them. Unfortunately, we cannot see most 1.5 centimeters long corals(珊瑚) 33 stars of the 200 billion stars from Earth. We can only see about 6,000 stars. If we don’t use telescopes or we have bad weathers, we can only see about 2,000 stars. On average, we harvest 0.54 billion tons of rice each year round the 90kg rice 1 iceberg world and each of us can have 90 kg. Asia produces and eats 90% of all the rice. How long will it take you to eat up this 90 kg rice? Luckily, we still have icebergs to share when Earth gets warmer and 用心 爱心 专心

In Brazil, soccer is considered an art form. So it is only fitting that the sport Brazilians call “the beautiful game” gets its own museum.
This is the land that produced football greats such as Garrincha, Zico, Romario, Ronaldo, Kaka, and the most famous of all, Pele. It is the only country to have qualified for every World Cup, and the only one to win it five times.
But until now, Brazil has never had a truly national museum honoring the sport that stands for Brazilian culture. That changed last month when the Museu do Futebol, or Football Museum, opened at Pacaembu Stadium in Sao Paulo.
Upon entering the museum, visitors are greeted in Portuguese, Spanish and English by a life-size image of Pele, who is so respected in Brazil that he is known as \"The King.\"
\"The Louvre has the Mona Lisa. We have our own piece of art -- Pele,\" said Hugo Sukman of the Roberto Marinho Foundation, which helped fund the construction of the museum.
In many ways, the museum is a shrine (圣祠)to Pele.
One of its most impressive displays is a temporary exhibit with 140 items from Pele's personal collection, including the wooden shoeshine box he used as a boy to earn spare change and the ball from his 1,000th goal in 1969.
The museum traces football's transformation from a sport for the noble to the passion of the 190 million common people. From the jungles of the Amazon to the slums(贫民窟) of cities like Rio de Janeiro and Recife, soccer unites Brazilians from all walks of life.
\"In general, a museum about football is also a museum about the history of Brazil and Brazilian culture,\" said Leonel Kaz, the museum's curator.

Millions of youngsters across Europe could suffer permanent hearing loss after five years if they listen to MP3 players at too high a volume for more than five hours a week, EU scientists warned.
The scientists’ study, requested by the European Commission, attacked the concept of “leisure noise,” saying children and teenagers should be protected from increasingly high sound levels---with loud mobile phones also coming in for criticism(批评).
“There has been increasing concern about exposure from the new generation of personal music players which can reproduce sounds at very high volumes without loss of quality,” the Commission, the EU’s executive arm, said in a statement.
“Risk for hearing damage depends on sound level and exposure time,” it said. More and more young people were exposed to the great threat(威胁)that leisure noise posed to hearing, it said.
Commission experts said that between 50 and 100 million people listen to portable music players on a daily basis.
If they listened for only five hours a week at more than 89 decibels(分贝), they would already be beyond EU limits for noise allowed in the workplace, they said. But if they listened for longer periods, they risked permanent hearing loss after five years.

The scientists calculated the number of people in that risk category at between five and 10 percent of listeners, meaning up to 10 million people in the European Union.
Sales of personal music players have soared in EU countries in recent years, particularly of MP3 players.
\"I am worried that so many young people ... who are frequent users of personal music players and mobile phones at high acoustic levels, may be unknowingly damaging their hearing ,\" she said in the statement.
67. Which of the following can be the best title of the article?

B. if one listened for 5 hours more a week at 100 decibels, he would risk permanent hearing loss.
C. it is only the level of the sound that can do damage to hearing.

It is an all too familiar story. A natural disaster strikes in a remote part of the world, causing destruction and suffering. Villages are flattened and people are forced into camps. It is now happening in China, after the earthquake of magnitude(里氏)8 that was centered on Wenchuan but shook the entire country.
Actually, in the past centuries, there were hundreds of thousands of earthquakes in different parts of the world. In Sept. 1923, Tokyo and Yokohama were both destroyed by an earthquake and the fires that followed it. They had to be completely rebuilt. One of the most serious earthquakes was in China’s Shanxi Province in 1556. It claimed almost one million people.
We measure an earthquake’s strength on the Richter scale. The Richter scale was introduced in

1935 in Southern California in the USA. It measures earthquakes on a scale of one to ten. Any earthquake measuring five or more is usually serious.
The earth’s crust (地壳) is made up of layers of rock called plates. As these plates move, they sometimes crash against each other, causing the crust to quake. In cities such as Tokyo, where small quakes happen quite often, many modern buildings are designed to be flexible so when the earth moves, they move with it.
Earthquakes can also break up gas or oil pipes. This can cause fires to break out, which can do as much damage as the earthquake itself.
Another effect of the earthquakes is tsunamis (海啸). These are huge waves created by earthquakes beneath the sea. They can be many meters high and cause great damage to costal towns and cities.

The teachers and students in our school have different opinions about whether it is necessary to hold a party to celebrate the Near Year.
Most students think that as we students have too heavy homework, it can enrich our school life and relieve our pressure. In addition, by doing so, students’ abilities can be developed. It is an unforgettable experience for us and also a good chance to earn respect from others.
But some teachers argue that it is a waste of time to rehearse, thus having a bad effect on students’ study. Besides, there will not be too many programmes and only a limited number of students can get on stage. Instead, we can organize some sports activities for more students to take part in.

M: I guess I’11 have to do that. Text 7
W: I’ve just bought a new dress. What do you think of it? M: It suits you. You look good in blue.
W: Do you really think so? You don't think I should have chosen a brighter color? M: Oh, no, I prefer you in a darker color.
W: All right, if you say so. Well.... what have you been doing while I’ve been out shopping? M: Oh, nothing much. I’ve written some letters, that’s all.
W: I thought you said you had to go and see someone this afternoon. M: That’s right. I was going to see Martin W: What made you change your mind? M: I simply forgot all about it. W: Won't he be worried?
M: I don' t think so. After all, he borrowed a lot of money from me and didn't return it. Text 8
W: Where do you come from, Chen?
M: I am from Harbin in the north. How about you. Betty?
W: I have lived in Montreal most of my life, but I am originally from Calgary. M: Originally?
W: I mean where I was born. M: I see.
W: My parents moved here when I was a child, and I have been here ever since. M: How far is Calgary from here, Betty?
W: Roughly 3,580 km. It takes about five hours by plane. M: Canada is very large, even.1arge r than China. W: But our population is much smaller than yours. M: Canada is also a little colder.
W: Don’t kid yourse1f. It’s much colder.
M: I believe the winters in Harbin are as cold as the winters in Montreal. Beijing is a little warmer, not as clod as Harbin, but much colder than Guangzhou in the south.

W: Steve. what's all that noise outside?
M: Just a minute. I'll have a look … Oh! It looks as if the new next-door neighbors are moving in. W: Oh, it's a bit early, isn't it? Well, I guess we'd better get up.
M: It’s amazing how quickly the houses are selling round here. The Browns only put it on the market a month ago.
W: Where did they move to?
M: I think he told me they were buying a house in Surbiton. W: Sounds nice. I hope the new neighbors are nice.
M: Well, I was speaking with Mr Brown last week. He told me they were a young couple with two daughters. They liked the house because it was near a good school. W: Two daughters! That will please John.
M: Ha! Maybe we’d better go next door and say hello.
W: Yes, and maybe we’d better start thinking of selling too. I’d like a house in Surbiton as well. M: Hmm. Text 10
I like making friends bu writing letters. I am from Beijing. I thought it would be interesting to have a pen friend
in America. So I wrote a letter to a school in New York. I received a nice letter from a teacher. She said that she had found a boy who would like to be my pen friend. She gave me the boy’s name and wrote something about him. I expected a letter from the boy for nearly a month, but he never wrote. I wrote to the teacher again. She told me that the boy had moved to another town with his parents and that she would try to find another pen friend for me.
She told me that she had shown my letter to the class and that they wanted to know about China. Now many students write to me. I have lots of friends in America.
