You know immediately that something strange is going on in the city of Rotorua. The air smells like bad eggs. Clouds of steam rise from the ground. Strange coverings of yellow, white, and red cover the rocks, which burn your hands. The ground shakes as a geyser (间歇泉) sends hot water 100 feet into the air.
Welcome to New Zealand’s North Island, where the earth boils under your feet. This hot spot is part of the Ring of Fire, a circle of underwater volcanoes (火山) and earthquake areas around the Pacific Ocean. New Zealand sits above a place between two plates (huge rocks that form the surface of the earth). As they slowly move together, the edge of one plate is pushed under the other, where it becomes molten (熔化的) rock. This molten rock heats rocks and groundwater lying above it, creating a hot area. Under Rotorua lies a huge amount of steam and hot water heated by molten rock.
Rotorua may not sound like a perfect place to live, but people who made their homes in the area managed to survive. The Maori people arrived 600 years ago and built villages around the hot springs. They used the hot water to wash and keep warm. They prepared their meals by placing baskets full of meat and vegetables into steaming pools. Today, the Maoris in traditional villages still use the heat the same way their ancestors did.
The people of Rotorua have learned to live above the boiling earth. Walkers in hot spots must stay on marked paths, or risk falling into a pool of boiling water. For safety, houses are not built in known hot areas. But sometimes the steam and hot water break through the ground in unexpected places. Imagine a geyser suddenly appearing in your front yard!
