[Class 7 (iii).] The plunger 30 and the suction valve 11 of a fuel-injection pump are operated by an electromagnet 13, the return strokes being effectedby springs 44, 18 respectively. The plunger 30 works in a movable cylinder 31 whichcarries the injection valve 34 ; during the first part of the discharge stroke, the cylinderrises and opens the injection valve, owing to the greater area of the lower surface of thecylinder exposed to pressure. A flange 45 on the plunger then comes into contact withthe upper end of the cylinder 31 and the remainder of the injection is effected at greaterspeed and pressure. The return strokes of the plunger and suction valve may be effectedby additional electromagnets instead of by springs.
