The guy who tried to edit English

The English vocabulary is not only huge, but also full of words that mean practically(几乎) the same thing- Get, obtain, acquire. Shine, gleam, glow, sparkle. ____36____

That was the thinking of a British writer named C. K. Ogden, who in the 1930s proposed (提议) a new form of English with a vocabulary of just 850 words. He called the project Basic English ____37____

Ogden arrived at his 850-word list through experimentation, rephrasing texts over and over until he was satisfied. The words he finally included were not necessarily the shortest or most concrete. ____38____ Because any verbal idea could be expressed with a small number of “operators”---words like come, go, get, take, have, make, be, and do. Ogden argued that most verbs were unnecessary. In Basic English, “eat” is “have a meal” and “forget” is “go from memory”.

Winston Churchill was a fan of the concept as a way to get foreigners to speak English, and he encouraged the BBC to use it. ____39____ Roosevelt, who expressed mild interest, joked that Churchill's famous speech about offering his “blood, toil, tears, and sweat” to his country wouldn't have been so exciting if he “had been able to offer the British people only blood, work, eye water, and face water, which I understand is the best that Basic English can do with five famous words.”

____40____ Churchill didn't use it either. When seeking to express ourselves, we don't necessarily need fewer words; we need the right words. So it's to our benefit to have a large supply on hand.

A. Do we really need them all?

B. How many words are there in English? C. Ogden himself didn't actually use Basic English.

D. Plenty of seemingly basic words did not make the list at all. E. He also tried to persuade President Franklin Roosevelt to promote it. F. He believed it would make the language more efficient and easier to learn.

G. Despite attention from world leaders, Basic English never got very far off the drawing board.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

To Start a Great Day

Some people find mornings filled with optimism, while others would just stay in bed until the clock passes the noon hour. Don't fear that because it is possible to get the day started right, no matter what comes your way.

36 Why start your day unorganized? If you organize your to-do list, breakfast mend and your clothes the night before, you'll wake up feeling in control and relaxed. What a little

2

efficiency it is! You'll save the frustration, leaving you ready to deal with more important issues.

Try 15 minutes of meditation(沉思). Some might he afraid that a meditation session early in the morning could just put you back to sleep. But genuine meditation actually stimulates (刺激)the brain in a deep and thoughtful way. 37 Center yourself with thoughtful thought and be open to the positive energy the world brings to you.

Begin with inspiration reading. 38 Reading the news is a sad way to start a day. Buy a few books that are uplifting, inspiring, or even humorous for your first brain stimulus. This will give you positive, fun thoughts to keep you energetic throughout the day.

39 If the first thing you see when you wake up is a dirty wall or a poor winter yard, you can certainly improve those few critical minutes with a pleasing splash of color. So pick up a pleasant bouquet every few days and set it right in your view.

Schedule a hopeful appointment. I never feel more energized getting out of bed than when I have an important meeting about an exciting opportunity. The prospect of a fun and productive encounter usually wakes me with a smile and often without an alarm clock. I purposefully schedule as many meetings like this as possible. 40 A. Plan your day the night before. B. Open your eyes to fresh flowers.

C. Reading newspapers can make you feel good. D. Try a cup of green tea to start with.

E. It allows you to clear distractions from your mind. F. In that way, I get as many great days as I want. G. In the morning, we must allow some time for reading.

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

What is your favorite color? Do you like yellow, orange, red? If you do, you must be an . optimist, a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer grey and blue? Then you are probably quiet, shy, and you would rather follow than lead. 36 At least, this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference, as well as the effect that colors have on human beings. 37 If you happen to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.

38 A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing. A black bridge over the Thames River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides(自杀) than any other bridge in the area—until it was repainted green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply. 39 40 It is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer

3

accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or grey. A. You tend to be pessimist.

B. The rooms are painted in different colors as you like. C. Life is like a picture or a poem, full of different colors. D. Colors do influence our moods—there is no doubt about it.

E. Light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active.

F. Perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.

G. They tell us, among other facts, that we do not choose our favorite color as we grow up—we are born with our preference.

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Playing sports is a lot of fun. But getting hurt is unavoidable. ___36___ Wear protective equipment.

The equipment you wear depends on the sport you play. Helmets(头盔)are the most common protective equipment. They protect your head while you 're playing football, baseball and softball, biking and so on. Warm up.

__37__ Doing some stretching exercises can get you prepared to play sports. By warming up, you get yourself ready to play. Warming up your muscles and practising a sport help keep you safe, too.

Know the rules of the games.

Traffic lights help prevent crashes between the cars that drive on the roads together. This works because drivers know the rules and follow them--at least most of the time.__38__ When players know the rules of the games, fewer injuries will happen. For example, you know that in football you can’t come from behind, crash into a player's legs and steal the ball. It's legal-and safer-to go after the ball rather than the player. __39__

Some rules have nothing to do with scoring points,They are just about protecting other people. For example,a diver would make sure that the pool is clear before diving in. Otherwise, he or she might land on someone else. __40__

This is a really important one. If you love sports, you may get right back to the game even you're injured. But playing when you're hurt is a bad idea. It can lead to an even worse injury. A. Watch out for others. B. Don't do too much exercise. C. It's the same way with sports. D. Don't play when you're injured.

4

E. It's not a good idea to just go to the field and start playing. F. You and the other players know what to expect from each other. G. Take these steps to prevent injuries so that you can stay in the game.

【分析】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了由奥格登创造出来的一种简化英语——基本英语。【36题详解】

根据第一段“The English vocabulary is not only huge, but also full of words that mean practically(几乎) the same thing- Get, obtain, acquire. Shine, gleam, glow, sparkle.”可知,英语的词汇量很大且有很多同义词。根据第二段“That was the thinking of a British writer named C. K. Ogden, who in the 1930s proposed (提议) a new form of English with a vocabulary of just 850 words.”可知,英国作家奥格登将英语词汇量减到850个。因此空格处是承上启下的作用。A. Do we really need them all?(我们确实需要那么多词汇吗)。由此可知A项符合语境。故选A。 【37题详解】

根据空格前“He called the project Basic English.”可知,这850个词汇是基本词汇。接下来应该陈述他确定基本词汇的理由。F. He believed it would make the language more efficient and easier to learn.(奥格登之所以创造基本英语是因为他觉得这样英语会更有效率,更容易学)。由此可知F项符合语境。故选F。 【38题详解】

根据上文的were not necessarily the shortest or most concrete及下文举的例子可知,很多基础的词汇并没有出现在基本英语中。D. Plenty of seemingly basic words did not make the list at all.(很多基础的词汇并没有出现在基本英语中)。由此可知D项符合语境。故选D。 【39题详解】

6

由下文的 “Roosevelt—who expressed mild interest”可知,此处是说丘吉尔也试图说服罗斯福总统推广基本英语,罗斯福表达了他的兴趣。E. He also tried to persuade President Franklin Roosevelt to promote it.(丘吉尔也试图说服罗斯福总统推广基本英语)。由此可知E项符合语境。故选E。 【40题详解】

根据下文的 “Churchill didn’t use it either. ”可知,丘吉尔也没有使用基本英语。C. Ogden himself didn't actually use Basic English.(奥格登并没有真正使用基本英语)。根据相似句式可知C项符合语境。故选C。
