1、This is not the world we know. This world is controlled by computers. Men and women can be seen, but they are following the orders given to them by machines. The machines were designed by mad scientists, but at some point even the mad scientists were taken over by their super-inventions.
Does this sound familiar? You have probably read something like it in magazines or books, or seen it in a film. Why is it so popular? One of the reasons is that it reflects the fears of many people; fear of the unknown fear of what is not understood or, at least, fear of something that is not completely understood.
The fact is that every day it seems that computers take control of another area of our lives. Some factory jobs are now done by robots and the robots are controlled by computers. Our bank accounts are managed by computers. At the airport, our tickets are sold by a computer. Certainly, many of these operations are made more efficient by computers, but our admiration is sometimes mixed with unsafe feelings. And this lack of safety is caused by the fact that we do not know how computers do these things, and we really don't know what they might do next.
But we can find out how computers work, and once we understand them, we can use computers instead of worrying about being used by them. Today, there is a new generation of computer wizards who know exactly how computers get things done. These young men and women, usually university students, are happy to sit for hours, sometimes for days, designing programs, not eating, not sleeping, but discovering what can be done by these wonderful slaves which they have learned to control. These computer wizards have learned to use the computer and search for new tasks for their machines.

2、 In 1826, a Frenchman named Niepce needed pictures for his business. But he was not a good artist. So he invented a very simple camera. He put it in a window of his house and took a picture of his garden. That was the first photo.
The next important date in the history of photography(摄影术)was in 1837. That year, Daguerre, another Frenchman, took a picture of his reading room. He used a new kind of camera in a different way. In his pictures you could see everything very clearly, even the smallest things. This kind of photo was called a Daguerreotype.
Soon, other people began to use Daguerre's way. Travelers brought back wonderful photos from all around the world. People took pictures of famous buildings, cities and mountains. In about 1840, photography was developed. Then photographers(摄影家)could take pictures of people and moving things. That was not simple. The photographers had to carry a lot of films and other machines. But this did not stop them, for example, some in the United States worked so hard.
Mathew Brady was a famous American photographer. He took many pictures of great people. The pictures were unusual because they were very lifelike(栩栩如生的).

Everything lives with opposite forces. The same can be said about modern technology, such as Internet.
7
At first glance Internet offers us excitement and a worl of promise. Frankly speaking, people who have some ideas of it can not deny the merits born with the system. For instance,it can improve proficiency in scientific research, for by means of it scientists and researchers can get a global look at the latest development in the field concerned and accordingly they need spend no time doing what has already been done. In view of personal communication, the most convenient means could be peculiar to Internet, too.
While people speak highly of Internet, its drawbacks shouldn't be neglected. Sometimes, alittle fatal breakdown of the system, or a disastrous error could bring us an enormous amount of damage and loss. Meanwhile, with lnternet's replacement of hooks or the written work as the main source of information, human's writing abilities are weakened and relations between people are desalinated

1、 Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it's painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you're \"hot\". That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as: \"Get up, John! You'll be late for work again!\" The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarreling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family including their kid has.
You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract (对抗) your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn (呵欠) and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do

2、 It came as something of a surprise when Diana, Princess of Wales, made a trip to Angola in 1997, to support the Red Cross's campaign for a total ban on landmines(地雷). Within hours of arriving in Angola, television screens around the world were filled with images of her comforting victims injured in explosions caused by landmines. \"I knew the statistics,\" she said. \"But putting a face to those figures brought the reality home to me; like when I met Sandra, a 13- year-old girl 9
who had lost her leg, and people like her.\"
The Princess concluded with a simple message: \"We must stop landmines\". And she used every opportunity during her visit to repeat this message.
But, back in London, her views were not shared by some members of the British government, which refused to support a ban on these weapons. Angry politicians launched an attack on the Princess in the press. They described her as \"very ill-informed\" and a \"loose cannon(乱放炮的人) \".
The Princess responded by brushing aside(不予理睬) the criticisms: \"This is a distraction(干扰) we do not need. All I'm trying to do is help.\"
Opposition parties, the media and the public immediately voiced their support for the Princess. To make matters worse for the government, it soon emerged that the Princess's trip had been approved by the Foreign Office, and that she was in fact very well-informed about both the situation in Angola and the British government's policy regarding landmines. The result was a severe embarrassment for the government.

Fortunately, people have realized this pressing problem and are trying to find ways to salve it. First, people are urged to economize on water. Second, measures are taken to protect water resources. Third, circulating water is used for industrial purposes over and over in factories and treated sewage water is used for irrigation in farming land.

1、What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear.
We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental (done with the mind) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists think that parents should play with their children more often, and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.
Parents should also be careful what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive things to their children, such as \"That was a very clever thing you did\" or \"You are such a smart child\".

2、Elderly people respond best to a calm and unhurried environment. This is not always easy to provide as their behavior can sometimes be irritating. If they get excited or upset then they may become more difficult to look after. Although sometimes it can be extremely difficult, it is best to be patient and not to get upset yourself. You should always encourage old people to do as much as possible for themselves but be ready to lend a helping hand when necessary.
Failing memory makes it difficult for the person to recall all the basic kinds of information we take for granted. The obvious way to help in this situation is to supply the information that is missing and help them make sense of what is going on. You must use every opportunity to provide information but remember to keep it simple and straightforward.
\"Good morning, Mum. This is Fiona, your daughter. It is eight o'clock, so if you get up now, we can have breakfast downstairs.\"
When the elderly person makes confused statements,e.g. about going out to his or her old employment or visiting a dead relative, correct in a calm matter-of-fact fashion: \"You don't work in the office any more. You are retired now. Will you come and help me with the dishes?\" We rely heavily on the information provided by signposts, clocks, calendars and newspapers. These assist us to organize and direct our behavior. Confused old people need these aids all the time to compensate for their poor memory. Encourage them to use reminder boards or diaries for important coming events and label the contents of different cupboards and drawers. Many other aids such as information cards, old photos, scrap books, and addresses or shopping list could help in individual case.

As is the case we can see, the rapid development of computer technology is exerting profound impact on our life, almost in every aspect. In addition to the use in working, computers are finding their way into the home. They are so intelligent that they seem to be able to solve all problems; consequently, some people say that it will sooner or later take the place of human beings.
As for me, I firmly hold the view that there is no such possibility on the grounds that computers are but machines, made by humans. They can only do as humans instruct them and our tasks are far too complicated for any machines to undertake.
For human, there is one thing that computers can never accomplish, that is, the former can make decision by their own while the latter can do nothing unless they are programmed.
In my opinion, computers will remain nothing but an extension of human brains, no matter how clever and sophisticated they will become.

Whenever possible, do
30
routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.

2、 In 1826, a Frenchman named Niepce needed pictures for his business. But he was not a good artist. So he invented a very simple camera. He put it in a window of his house and took a picture of his garden. That was the first photo.

The photographers had to carry a lot of films and other machines. But this did not stop them, for example, some in the United States worked so hard.
Mathew Brady was a famous American photographer. He took many pictures of great people. The pictures were unusual because they were very lifelike(栩栩如生的).

1、When it comes to walking off those excesses(过剩), a lengthy hike once a day will do you far more good than nipping down to(一溜烟跑)
short walks add up to the same amount of time, say exercise researchers in Britain. But walks of any length beat sitting at home with your feet up and watching television. They stress.
Some researchers in Britain reached these conclusions after putting 56 couch potatoes through an 18-week course of daily walks.
They found that longer walks produce the most beneficial changes to the composition of
37
blood fats, but walks of any length improve the fitness of the heart.
In the study, the normally inactive subjects were divided into three roughly equal groups. The \"long walker\" took a hike of between 20 and 40 minutes every day. \"Intermediate walkers\" had two rounds of jogging of 10 to 15 minutes, and \"short walkers\" did three stints of 90 to 110 minutes. The controls sat at home, as usual.
At the start and end of the 18 weeks, the health and fitness of each group were measured and it was found that the long walkers were healthiest, as measured by altered fat profiles in their blood.
At the end, each liter of blood from the long walkers contained an average 0.05 grains less apolipoprotein (阿朴脂蛋白) II, a \"bad\" fat that is linked with heart disease. This was more than twice the drop seen in the intermediate walkers, and five times that in short walkers. In the controls, the level of this fat stayed the same. The drop in apolipoprotein II in the long walker was matched by a rise in the blood level of apolipoprotein I, a \"good\" fat that is associated with smooth arteries.

2、 When you think of the cinema, the phrase \"watching a movie\" probably comes to mind, and, in fact, moviemakers work very hard to make their films interesting visually. But movies also contain stories, dialogues, music and sound effects - things that people don't need to see in order to enjoy.
Movie reviewer Marty Klein has created a website to help visually impaired people choose movies that they can follow themselves. Klein gives movies a rating from 1 to 10. A movie receives a high rating if there are only a few main characters whose voices are easy to recognize. Klein also likes an interesting story without too many changes in time and place. A large amount of dialogues between the characters is better than long silences or noisy action scenes. Of course, visually impaired people can enjoy many films when a friend explains the parts that can only be seen. But that means that blind people cannot go to the movies independently. To solve these problems, some movie theaters have begun to offer recorded audio descriptions of the movements, scenery, and special effects that other audience members can see on the screen. Blind moviegoers receive a wireless headset to wear during the movie. This allows them to listen to the narration while still hearing a movie's music and other sounds that surround them in the theater. Another blind movie reviewer, Jay Forry, writes movie reviews that are published on his website. He also writes for newspapers and is a guest on radio shows. Forry gives movies one of five ratings, including, \"So good, blind people will like it\" and \"I'm glad I couldn't see it.\" Forry became a writer after going blind at the age of 20 and he decided to go to college. His first articles appeared in the college newspaper, and Forry's writing skills and sense of humor are what keep people reading his reviews or listening to them on the radio. After \"watching\" The Sixth Sense, Forry commented that he thought the movie was excellent, but that he envied the boy who was the main character: \"He had six senses, and I only have four.\"

People sometimes confuse acquaintances with friends. The two terms have something in common, but, as far as I'm concerned, there are more 1 between them. An acquaintance is one 2 name you know, who you probably have something in common with and who you feel comfortable around. 3 you don't share your life with most of them because you don't know enough about them.
A friend, however, is 4 you love. Not that you are \"in love\" with them, but you 5 them and you think about them when they are not there. You feel 6 with them because you know they won't hurt you. You know that if you have a problem, they are there to listen. Friends are the people who prevent you 7 making mistakes and help you when you do. They are the people whose hand you can hold. It has three floors with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, two big dining rooms and two living rooms. When my friends come to visit me, I will have enough bedrooms for them. We’ll have a good time. Besides that, we will have a swimming pool behind the house and a garden in front of the house. In the morning, my parents can do some exercise in the garden. The air must be very

1、 In the past, operations were difficult. Until the middle of the eighteen fifties, surgery was very dangerous. Many patients died after even the smallest operations. This was because bacteria entered the cuts in the patients' bodies and started infection. In some countries, up to 90 percent of patients died from infection after operations. In 1865, however, Joseph Lister, a British surgeon, found an answer to the problem. He used an \"antiseptic\"(消毒剂)during and after operations. This killed the dangerous bacteria and most of his patients lived. Since then, surgeons have used antiseptics in all operations.
Surgery has developed in many important ways since the day of Joseph Lister. Today, when patients go to hospital for an operation, they can expect the best treatment, in clean and hygienic(消毒,卫生的)conditions.

2、Many countries face a somewhat more serious economic problem in the form of an unfavorable trade balance with other nations. Such an imbalance exists when the total value of a country's imports exceeds that of its exports. For example, if a country buys $25 billion of products from other countries, yet sells only $10 billion of its own products overseas, its trade deficit(贸易逆差) is $15 billion. Many underdeveloped nations find themselves in this position because they lack natural resources or the industrial capacity to use these resources, and thus have to import raw materials or manufactured goods.
One effect of a trade deficit is the flow of currency out of a country. In the case of an underdeveloped nation, this can cause many financial difficulties, including failure to meet debt payments and obstacles to creation of an industrial base. Even in the case of a fully developed nation such as the United States, a large trade deficit is a reason for alarm. American products, made by well-paid workers in U.S. industries, cost more to produce than those made in places like Asia, where labor and material costs are much lower. Money spent on foreign products is money not spent on items produced by domestic industries.

This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at
59
your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn (呵欠) and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.

speeding up the process generally. Most people can learn to cover material much faster than they do now while maintaining a high level of comprehension.
Improvement in reading efficiency has several major benefits. We need reading skills to benefit from the wealth of information that is now available in printed form. Most people get the rough outlines of their daily news from television and radio. However, the printed word still provides the in-depth coverage of topics that really produces well-informed people. Reading is also a great source of entertainment for many people. For students, it is the primary method of studying.
The time you now spend reading can be made much more productive by increasing your reading rate. For some people this will mean that they can obtain more information in the same length of time. For others it will mean that time now devoted to reading can be used in other more interesting and profitable ways.
To determine how fast you are reading, you first have to get some idea of the number of words in a given passage. Then you simply divide the number of words by the number of minutes it takes to read. That will give your rate in words per minute.

2、 If you have recently started collecting stamps, or are thinking about starting, you may be wondering if the hobby is expensive. Can you enjoy it with limited money? What if you have no money at all for the hobby? The answer is an absolute positive one. Not all collections consist mainly of unused stamps that you buy in the post office. Used stamps are worth saving, have value, and they may cost you nothing. In fact, many stamp collectors save only used stamps!
The first place to search for stamps, then, is your own mailbox. You can ask people who write to you to use commemorative(纪念性的) stamps on their mail. Also, if you write away for offers that require a self-addressed stamps envelope, you can put commemoratives on your return envelopes, knowing that they will come back to you later. Neighbors, friends, and relatives are another good source of stamps. A majority of people is only too happy to save the stamps on their mail for someone who will appreciate them. You may even know someone who works in an office that gets a lot of mail. Many businesses get a lot of foreign mail and regularly throw away stamps that may have interest or value to a collector. And don't forget to ask your parents if they have any old letters which may still have stamps on the envelopes.
Now that you have stamps on paper, what do you do with them? The most common way to get stamps off paper is to soak them in water, then dry them on paper. To understand more about soaking stamps, it is best to find a handbook on stamp collecting at the library.
Stamp clubs are another place to get stamps. A club may offer stamps as prizes, or have inexpensive stamps you can afford to buy. If you don't have a stamp club around you, try to start one with a few others. All it takes are four or five other stamp collectors who are interested in getting together to learn about and trade stamps and ideas. Obtaining a pen pal(笔友) in another country is a very good way to get stamps from that country. His or her extra stamps may seem really common in that country, but over here they are much scarcer.
