You speak, write a letter, and make a telephone call. Your words carry a message. People communicate with words. But do you think you can communicate without words? A smile on your face shows you are happy or friendly. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad. When you raise your hand in class, the teacher knows you want to say something or ask questions. You shake your head, and people know you are saying “No”. You nod and people know you are saying “Yes”. Other things can also carry messages. For example, a sign on the bus helps you to know which bus to take. A sign on the door tells you where to go in or out. Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of signs around you and you receive messages from them all the time? People can communicate in many other ways.
An artist can use his drawing to tell about the beautiful mountains, about the blue sea and many other things. Books are written to tell about all the wonderful things in the world and also about people and their ideas.
Books, magazines, TVs, radios and films all help us communicate with others. They all help us to know what is going on in the world and what other people are thinking about. 46. People communicate__________. A. with words only C. in letters and with drawing
B. in many different ways
D. with smiles, tears and hands
47. Signs can carry as much __________ as words. A. questions B. examples
C. tears and smiles

48. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage as things which help us communicate?

49. Communication is important because it can help people to __________. A. understand the world and other people better B. teach each other to speak, write, read and draw C. know what other people are thinking about D. learn what’s happening in the world more quickly 50. The best title for this short passage is __________.
A. Signs Carry Messages B. The Importance of Communication C. Words, Signs and Drawings D. Ways of Communication
B
What will man be like in the future — in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is relatively a short period of time, so we may assume(假定;设想)that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring a physical change too: the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger.
Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life.
But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.
Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and motions similar to our own.
51. The passage mainly tells us that __________. A. Man’s life will be different in the future B. Future man will look quite different from us C. Man is growing taller and uglier as time passes D. Man’s organs’ functions will change
52. What serves as the evidence that man is changing? A. Man has got stronger eyes now than he ever had. B. Man’s hair is getting thinner and thinner.
C. Man’s arms and legs have become lighter and weaker. D. Man has been growing taller over the past 500 years.
53. The change in man’s size of the forehead is probably because __________. A. he makes use of only 20% of the brain’s capacity B. his brain has grown larger over the past centuries C. the other 80% of his brain will grow in due time D. he will use his brain more and more as time goes on
. Which of the following is TRUE about a human being in the future? A. He is hairless because hair is no longer useful.
B. He has smaller eyes and wears better glasses.
C. His fingers grow weaker because he doesn’t have to make use of them. D. He thinks and feels in a different way. 55. It is implied that __________.
A. human beings will become less attractive in the future B. less use of a bodily organ may lead to its degeneration(退化) C. human beings hope for a change in the future life D. future life is always predictable
C
阅读下面短文,按照要求回答问题。
What will the city of the future look like? No one knows for sure, and making predictions is a risky business. But one thing is certain — they are going to get bigger before they get smaller. In the future, care for the environment will become very important as earth’s natural resources run out. We will use lots of recycled materials, such as plastic, aluminum, steel, glass, wood and paper, and we will waste fewer natural resources. We will also have to rely more on alternative energy, such as solar and wind power. All this seems certain, but there are plenty of things about city life in the future which are not certain.
To find out what young people think about the future of urban life, a teacher at a university in Texas in the United States asked his students to think how they would run a city of 50,000 people in the year 2025. Here are some of the ideas they had:
Garbage ships To get rid of garbage problems, the city will load huge spaceships with waste materials and send them towards the sun, preventing landfill and environmental problems.
Batman Nets Police will arrest criminals by firing nets instead of guns.
Forget smoking No smoking will be allowed within a future city’s limits. Smoking will be possible only outside cities, and outdoors.
Forget the malls In the future all shopping will be done online, and catalogues will have voice commands to place orders.
Telephones for life Everyone will be given a telephone number at birth that will never change no matter where they live.
Recreation All forms of recreation such as cinemas, bowling, softball, concerts and others,
will be provided free of charge by the city.
Cars All cars will be powered by electricity, solar energy or wind, and it will be possible to change the colour of cars at the flick of a switch.
Telesurgery Distance surgery will become common as doctors carry out operations from thousands of miles away, with each city having its own telesurgery outpatient clinic.
Holidays at home Senior citizens and people with disabilities will be able to go anywhere in the world using high-tech cameras attached to their heads.
Space travel Travelling in space by ordinary citizens will be common. Each city will have its own spaceport.
56. Where will garbage ships go?
_________________________________________________________________________ 57. Who will batman nets catch?
_________________________________________________________________________ 58. How will cars be different?
_________________________________________________________________________ 59. What number will people keep for life?

Read the following passage and write a similar passage about your town.
There are too many cars in our town. As a result there are lots of traffic jams, and the air we breathe is terrible. The town is old and the streets are narrow, so there is no room for bus lanes. This means that buses get stuck in the traffic jams, too. There are also lots of accidents with cyclists. There’s a simple solution to these problems. They should close the city centre to all traffic except buses and bikes, and build large car pans outside the town. Motorists could take a bus into the city centre and arrive at work or the shops relaxed and in a good mood.
